    A Bledian view

I have heard people saying good and bad about Lake Bled. "Bohinj is better", "Bled is a touristic circus", etc.. They may be right from their perspective. I don't know. My time spent walking around the lake, on a qiuet day in September, was beautiful, peaceful and rewarding. It is a gorgeous lake, well deserving its reputation as a place to see in Slovenia

Walk around the lake, early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Sit on a bench and contemplate the little island, the mountains beyond, the boats drifting on the water. Hike above the SW end of the lake to the viewpoint over the entire scene. Take a boat cruise to the island - maybe a tourist trap there? Or walk up to the castle on the north end of the lake. For nice 'virtual panoramas' of the lake, castle and from the island, go to this website and click on the 'Bled' circle. The site is in both English and Slovene.

Lake Bohinj is an alternative and is a fine lake. But comparing the two experiences to me is comparing wine to beer. What is the point? Go and see both!!

  • Spanish Riding School Morning Exercise. If you want to see a load of amateurs doing sliding around to music then visit this. We walked out after 30 minutes and complained loudly - we got a refund! Expect to wait 1.25 hours to see this rip off

Izola is a costal town located some km. far from Piran.

There you can see some nice palaces and a nice church painted orange.

Izola has also a large marina, lots of accomodations, restaurants and cafes.

The old core of Izola is really ugly. This is my opinion.

Have a drink or lunch (or dinner) or do some shopping.

    Visit Piran.

    Vrsic pass in Julian Alps

  • The top of the Vrsic pass in the Julian Alps (the highest mountain road in Slovenia). It is the only one pass in the whole Alps where you are asked to pay for the parking (it was a steep 6 DEM when I was there in August 2000). You can avoid that by either avoiding July, August and the weekends or by coming early in the morning or late at night or simply by not parking at or near the top of the Vrsic pass.

    Crossing border to Italy

  • Non-EU citizens can't get across border at Nova Gorica train terminal. Guards tell you to go elsewhere. This is the train you can take from Lake Bled station to Italy border.

    I think you've got 3 options:
    1) Sneak across square opposite train station. Unmanned as far as we could tell - just pretend you didn't read the signs (which aren't prominent anyway).
    2) Wait for International Bus. This is supposed to run hourly and takes you through correct border post.
    3) Walk (same direction as train came - south I think) past first border post (they won't let you through here) along cycle path adjacent to railway until you cross quite a large post under, about 1 km from train I guess. Find your way down to this. DON'T go 3 km as we were told, where you may find a third post ... they won't let you in there either.

Well, it's quite fun getting lost. Best wait for Int bus I guess, or use entirely different access to Italy. But the train ride from Bled is really cool through the little Julian Alps villages!

Not exactly a tourist "trap", just a reminder. Many Slovenian churches are not open for visiting. Even in cities like Ljubljana or Piran and even more so in smaller villages, you can only peep through a window or a gate. In some cases you may get the keys to the church by a neighbour if you check beforehand with a good guidebook or the local tourist information. This was a bit sad, as all Slovenian churches we saw were very beautiful.

The church in the photo (Franziscan church in Ljubljana) is open to the public and very impressive.

    Tolar coins used until
    December 2006

Slovenian coins are very elegant. One side bears an animal and the other side the value of the coin.

Tolar coins were used until December 2006. The new €uros coins have one national side.

As soon as I get them, I will put here the national face of the new coins. I borough to Wikipedia their description:
    € 0.01 : A stork, a motif taken from the former 20 SIT coin
€ 0.02 : The Prince's stone, where Karantanian dukes were installed
    € 0.05 : Grohar's painting A Sower sowing stars
€ 0.10 : Plečnik's idea for the national parliament, with the inscription "Katedrala svobode" (Cathedral of freedom)
€ 0.20 : A pair of Lipizzaner horses with the inscription "Lipicanec" (Lipizzaner)
€ 0.50 : Triglav, constellation of Cancer1 and inscription from Jakob AljaĎ's song "Oj Triglav moj dom" (O Triglav, my home)
€ 1.00 : Primož Trubar and the inscription "Stati inu obstati" (to stand and withstand)
€ 2.00 :·France Prešeren and the first line of the 7th stanza of Zdravljica (Slovenian national anthem)
    € 2 Coin Edge : S L O V E N I J A

More detailed information on the €uro coins will be found on the Slovenian Government Public Relations and Media Office site

It is always important to know how the money, Banknotes and coins of a country look like. Here are some of the banknotes you will use the more often.

The Slovenian banknotes bear on one side important figures of the Slovenian history.

These banknotes were replaced by €uro banknotes on January 2007. €uro banknotes are the same on both sides across the whole €uro zone.
