There seem to be lots of questions here asking about the best/most efficient ways to get from eastern Italy --Trieste or Venice-- to the Slovenian coast or Ljubljana, Slovenia's capital. Here's a rundown covering most bases: To Ljubljana via rail - There are currently three daily direct departures from Venice, from both the Santa Lucia (old town) and the mainland's Mestre stations, to Ljubljana, which should cover the distance in about four hours. At 25 euros each way, it's a pretty good option. Be prepared for some delays at the border and consider yourself warned if you have a tight onward connection from Mestre. (Venezia Mestre is a major northeast Italian rail hub.) Train schedule is here: http://www.slo-zeleznice.si/en/international_transport/international_links/italy/venice_venezia/ From Trieste: If your itinerary includes a visit to Slovenia's coast and onward travel to Croatia's Istra or Dalmatian Coasts, Trieste is the best option. Hourly rail connections from Mestre to Trieste (6-8 euros), total travel time under 2 hours. There is also regular bus service from Trieste's Ronchi Airport to Trieste's bus station; buses also correspond with EasyJet arrivals and departures. From Trieste, there's regular bus service weekdays to the Slovenia coast, roughly every 90 minutes or so. All buses go to the main port city of Koper (about 3 euros); some travel onward to Piran at the end of the coast. [Schedule from the Trieste bus station is at http://www.saf.ud.it/oraripercorsi/ts-pirano.pdf .] Trieste's bus station is immediately to the right of the train station. Notes ? -Last bus for Koper leaves Trieste at 19:00; there is local onward bus service until 23:00. -NO buses on Sat, Sun or holidays. -At Koper station look for Taxi Sonce, a local taxi that charges the same as bus fare. -Problems you may encounter in Trieste are the occasional (and occasionally unannounced) local bus strikes. -There is no train service from Trieste to Koper. Go to Venice by any way. From Venice it's easy going to Piran. You must get a train to Trieste, there are a lot of trains a day and the trip is about 2 hours. Trieste is just in the border of Slovenia. In Trieste leave the station, walk 100 meters and you will find the bus station to Slovenia. Ask for the bus to Pirano (italian name) get it, and... enjoy Piran . . Leave a Comment Theme: Train

Hi, if you are staying at a friend's place in Trieste, ask him to take you by car to Koper or to Sezana (it's only 10 km) and then take a train or a bus to Ljubljana or whatever destination in Slovenia, it would be much easier for you. For railway timetables visit www.slo-zeleznice.si. Travelling by train is a little bit slower, but more relaxing and pleasant. Beware, there are fewer trains on weekends than on working days. Shortly after Slovenia joined the EU, Easyjet started flying direct from London to Ljubljana and no doubt other airlines have since followed suit. We didn't have this option so we chose to fly to Graz in Austria and take the train to Maribor, and from there we made our way to Ljubljana. On the return, we went from Ljubljana to Venice by train and flew back to London with easyjet. So not having a direct flight to Ljubljana worked out well for us as we also got to see 2 more great cities. For costs and times of trains in Slovenia see my individual Slovenia pages. This time I'm flying to Trieste with Ryanair and taking a bus to Piran. Last time though, we took in Slovenia as part of a tour of Europe. Germany, Czech republic, Austria, Slovina and Italy. At the time we travelled by car and had no difficulties. Mind you, I wasn't the driver! Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

Cars may be rented at most of the bigger cities all around the country. They are available in all categories and the prices (which vary from agency to ageny) are not that high. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

There is one intercity train called "Citadella" between Ljubljana and Budapest. It does not go via Croatia - it goes via Hodos-Zalaegerszeg. There is a "Budapest special"/"Ljubljana special": if you travel by that train, the one-way ticket costs 29 Euro, round-trip 39 Euro. There is no seat limitation or forced Internet booking. In the fact, as far as I know, seat reservation is optional on that train. Only downside: it does not have dining car, buy your own food. Theme: Train

When in Slovenia, it is always cheaper to take train than bus. Also, buses are less comfortable and take longer time to reach distance. Also, as student or under 26 you can get discount only by Euro26 card. Shame, but no other cards or evidence is applicable in this country! By bus no discount at all, unless you're frequent traveller at certain bus company. Going to NE Slovenia (Pomurje region) by train takes about 3-4 hours and note that connections with capital are not that good from this part, only if it is 'only' 200 km from it. The most modern trains run only between Koper- Ljubljana-Maribor. They are the fastest.
