I flew into Trieste Airport...

by Zap-b

I flew into Trieste Airport with Ryanair - the no-frills Irish airline which can get you there very cheaply. They advertise the fact that they fly to Trieste Airport though this is a bit of a stretch as they actually fly into an airport situated beside the town of Monfalcone, abotu 35kms north of Trieste. From here its less than 100kms. to Ljubljana. In order to save time as we didn't have too much of it to spare we hired a car from the airport and drove to Ljubljana. Good motorways cross the country - these are toll roads and payment is in Slovenian Tolar or €'s.

There is a great variety of means of transportation, ranging from bus to train, and all quite cheap by western standards. I was lucky to be driven around by a local, affording me countless photo opportunities I would have otherwise missed. Thanks, Tanja. Still, all in all, the best way to get around in the Slovenian mountains is on foot. The trails are well marked and in taking the time, you see so much more.

The best way of getting to...

by lukec

The best way of getting to Slovenia from neighbouring countries is by train. There are direct train connections to Ljubljana from Austria, Italy and Croatia. I can now confirm that construction of rail tracks towards Hungary has been completed and it will be possible to travel directly between Ljubljana and Budapest in the summer 2001 by train. An alternative to train is flying in to Slovenia. Slovenia operates 2 international airports, of which the Brnik airport near Ljubljana has connections with all major European capitals.I guess the best way to get around Slovenia, if you don't have a car or money to rent one, is by bus. Ljubljana is the hub of Slovenian bus network and despite the fact that Ljubljana main bus station is a bit of a shame to the city, you can get almost everywhere from there, since there's a bus to nearly every bigger village. The only things that are not well...

Row your own boat in Lake Bled to visit the lovely Baroque church. It's more romantic, less expensive and not too far!

Toll Roads

The major motorways between Koper, Ljubljana and Maribor are toll roads. Only fair in my opinion, since the Slovenian motorways are well-maintained and in excellent condition.
