I exclusively entered Slovenia...

by lotharlerch

I exclusively entered Slovenia by car on many occasions from all neighbouring countries and that is all easy. I never had any problems with the frontiers except sometimes short (up to 20 min.) queues on main checkpoints which often can ´be overcome just taking a nearby less known border crossing. From Hungary some minor checkpoints are only open for Slovenians and Hungarians. I am not sure whether such rules are still valid at the borders to the EU members Austria and Italy but I know that they were valid earlier. This is a historical remark! Now Slovenia is part of the Schengen area which means that there are no border checks at the borders towards Austria, Italy and Hungary but very strict controls at the Croatian border. The fastest way from Austria is via the Karawanken tunnel (road toll 90 ATS) on the Autobahn between Villach and Jesenice or the motorway between Graz and Maribor....

Ljubljana to Budapest or v.v. transportation

by GyuriFT

There is one intercity train called "Citadella" between Ljubljana and Budapest. It does not go via Croatia - it goes via Hodos-Zalaegerszeg. There is a "Budapest special"/"Ljubljana special": if you travel by that train, the one-way ticket costs 29 Euro, round-trip 39 Euro. There is no seat limitation or forced Internet booking. In the fact, as far as I know, seat reservation is optional on that train.Only downside: it does not have dining car, buy your own food.

Driving

You must be at least 18 years old and carrying a full UK drivers licence. If your licence is still the old style (with no photo) you will need to have your passport to hand for I.D back-up. You should have your vehicle registration documents with you and if you are not the registered owneer you should also carry a letter from them giving you permission. Adequate insurance is a must and a green card is handy.Your lights must be on regardless of whether it is day or night. The speed limits are : Urban 50kph Open road 90kph Dual-carriageways 100kph Expressways 130kph unless you are a car towing a caravan when you are restricted (I think to 80kph - but check it).Good & easy road system - many places you can choose between the scenic and the direct route - some direct routes still benig built. Some tolls but they are inexpensive.

We got the train to Croatia. Seems to be a punctual and frequent service to many European cities. 2 hours to Zagreb, and only 20 Euro return. The station is clean and lots of info. 30p for a wee is a bit steep mind you

Koper bus station

by Willettsworld

The first thing you should know about the bus station is that there isn’t one! Well, it’s actually located inside the train station on the right as you walk in. This is where you can pay and reserve tickets but you can also get tickets when you board the bus. Buses travel regularly along the coast to Piran, Izola and Portoroz. There’s a timetable posted near the station entrance plus some of the stands have details as well. You may also be approached by some of the nearby taxi drivers who will offer you a lift in a mini-bus taxi along the coast for the same fare as the bus (750SIT). I did this when I went to Piran and it’s much quicker than a bus but the driver is always looking for passengers on the way.Buses also depart for Trieste at 6am, 7am, 7.30am, 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm, 5.30pm, 8pm Reserve your ticket in the train station.Buses also depart for Ljubljana at 4.56am, 7.40am, 11.20am,...

Koper train station

by Willettsworld

Koper’s train station is located about 1km south-east of the Old Town so it’s a bit of a walk if carrying a backpack or suitcase. The building is a pure relic of the communist era that hasn’t seen a lick of paint or any repairs for quite some time. It’s a fairly quite place as there are only around 6 trains to Ljubljana every day and takes around 2.25hrs. There aren’t many facilities here except for a few luggage storage lockers, horrible plastic seats which luckily are near some much needed a/c units and toilets which again need serious repair. The arrivals and departures times and details are posted on the wall near the entrance and a useful map of the town is also nearby.

Petrol stops

by Tom_In_Madison

Stopped at many petrol stations for petrol. One nice thing about them here is they have decent sandwiches in the shop area of the gas stations. And they take credit cards, so you can buy stuff in the gas stations to eat and drink and pay with your credit card. This way if you're just passing thru, you don't have to worry about changing money.

Bus Station, Ljubljana

by Willettsworld

Ljubljana's bus station is located right outside the train stations main entrance and in fact the buses line-up under their relevant number right in front of it. At the bus station you can find a couple of counters to be tickets from English speaking attendants, a money exchange counter, telephones, internet access and a small shop. One of the best things I found was a screen (outside, at the opposite end to the train station) which you can use to check bus times and prices and, of course, can be used anytime of the day.I took buses to/from Bled (1470 SIT each way), Skofja Loka (710 SIT) and back from Kranj (830 SIT) and they were very comfortable with good leg room and a/c.

Airport/Easyjet & bus

by Willettsworld

Ljubljana's airport is the smallest capital city airport I've seen. When you walk off the plane and into the terminal building you go straight up to passport control and then 10 yards further on is the luggage reclaim and then you're out! One point to note is that there is no money exchange desk. Instead there is a machine where you can manually feed in notes and receive the local currency but it wasn't working whilst I and other passengers were there. Don't fret as everywhere in Ljubljana takes euros so bring some along with you.The easiest way to reach Ljubljana by air from the UK is to take an easyjet flight from London Stansted. It only takes around 2hrs and is, of course, very cheap. There is a bus that goes between the airport and main bus station in Ljubljana (well just to the west of it) which takes about 30mins. The bus left about 10mins or so after I got on at the airport and it...

Ljubljana train station

by Willettsworld

The train station is located to the north of the city centre (it's only about a 10min walk from Preseren Square). The main ticket and reservation counters are straight to your left as you enter plus there's a tourist office, money exchange counter, bar/cafe, snack shop and several places to eat either across the road or to the right of the station. As you exit through the rear of the station and onto the platform there are toliets and luggage storeage to your left whilst the other platforms can be accessed via an underground passageway which is a bit of walk away to your right. Anyway, everything you need is signposted. The trains are not that frequent so it's not that busy. I took a train upto Maribor and the scenery on the way was stunning as you follow the Sara ans Savinja rivers.
