Slovene highways

by mikelisaanna

Slovenia has a good road system, with modern highways that can get you quickly around the country. However, many of them are toll roads, so you will need to remember to carry a decent amount of cash with you when you drive around the country. Also, the country is relatively small, so you may run into a border crossing if you aren't paying attention while driving down the highway and admiring the scenery, so carrying passports is not a bad idea.

Rental Cars

by mikelisaanna

The best way to see Slovenia's beautiful countryside is to rent a car and drive. Numerous rental car companies (Avis, Hertz, etc.) have counters at Ljubljana Airport. We rented from Avis and had no problems. AMericans need to keep in mind that, like in every European country, you need to specifically request an automatic transmission if you need one, and that European cars are, on average, much smaller than American ones. We rented a diesel Volvo station wagon, which gave us plenty of storage space and had plenty of power to get up and over the hills.

Slovenias Main International Airport

by SueWarwick

Brnik airport is situated not far from the capital city, Ljubljana and about 30 minutes drive away from the resort of Lake Bled. The airport itself is tiny. Departures is basically one room consiting of two duty free shops, some seats, a small bar selling various drinks and the 6 or 7 'gates'However, the size does mean you can check in about 10 minutes before the flight it due to depart and flights generally leave on time (unless delayed by weather)

Adria Airways

by SueWarwick

I have travelled twice with Adria Airways to Slovenia from Manchester (UK).On board meals are a lot less than when I previously flew with Adria but are sufficient for a two hour flight (a cheese sandwhich on the outbound flight this time and custard slice on the return flight)Generally flights are on one of Adrias three Airbus A320 planes although they have recently leased a Boing 737 from Lufthansa (and to be honest a more comfortable plane)Three of my flights were dead on time or slightly early. Only experienced one delay and that was due to the poor weather in Slovenia at the time. The views over Slovenia are amazing - try and get a window seat!

Trieste or Venice to Slovenian Coast and Ljubljana

by pirano

There seem to be lots of questions here asking about the best/most efficient ways to get from eastern Italy --Trieste or Venice-- to the Slovenian coast or Ljubljana, Slovenia's capital. Here's a rundown covering most bases:To Ljubljana via rail - There are currently three daily direct departures from Venice, from both the Santa Lucia (old town) and the mainland's Mestre stations, to Ljubljana, which should cover the distance in about four hours. At 25 euros each way, it's a pretty good option. Be prepared for some delays at the border and consider yourself warned if you have a tight onward connection from Mestre. (Venezia Mestre is a major northeast Italian rail hub.)Train schedule is here:http://www.slo-zeleznice.si/en/international_transport/international_links/italy/venice_venezia/From Trieste: If your itinerary includes a visit to Slovenia's coast and onward travel to Croatia's...

train cheaper than bus

by picek

When in Slovenia, it is always cheaper to take train than bus. Also, buses are less comfortable and take longer time to reach distance. Also, as student or under 26 you can get discount only by Euro26 card. Shame, but no other cards or evidence is applicable in this country! By bus no discount at all, unless you're frequent traveller at certain bus company. Going to NE Slovenia (Pomurje region) by train takes about 3-4 hours and note that connections with capital are not that good from this part, only if it is 'only' 200 km from it. The most modern trains run only between Koper- Ljubljana-Maribor. They are the fastest.

Taxi Stefan - Slovenian Transport Ace

by MissGigi

This guy is the absolute business, if you get stuck without public transport, or if you want hassle-free private transport. We got stuck in Piran one Sunday, needing to get to Triest (Italy) for our Venice connection, and not realising that most buses dont run on Sundays (duh!). This driver was recommended to us by the locals - he was slightly cheaper than a taxi, and drives a mini-van. Stefan got us to Trieste quickly, and comfortably. On top of this, we found him to be a really sweet guy.

From London to Slovenia

by barryg23

Shortly after Slovenia joined the EU, Easyjet started flying direct from London to Ljubljana and no doubt other airlines have since followed suit. We didn't have this option so we chose to fly to Graz in Austria and take the train to Maribor, and from there we made our way to Ljubljana. On the return, we went from Ljubljana to Venice by train and flew back to London with easyjet. So not having a direct flight to Ljubljana worked out well for us as we also got to see 2 more great cities. For costs and times of trains in Slovenia see my individual Slovenia pages.

Flying to Slovenia

by SueWarwick

Probably the best way to get to Slovenia is to fly directly in to its only airport.Adria Airlines fly directly from England (I went from Manchester airport)Flight is just over 2 hours. The airport itself is very small so on your return home unless you are a keen plane spotter, take a book or something! The flight itself offers some nice views as you approach Slovenia but on a clear day, there is some nice scenery for much of the journeyAnd as for the all important inflight food - salad, ham, bread roll, pistachio cake, coffee and a little bottle of red wine

Drive it!

by CCW

Slovenia has recently put a lot of money and effort into improving their motorways, so it's possible to stay in Ljubljana and visit the rest of the country by making day trips by car. Gas is cheaper than in many other European countries, but the road tolls can add up quickly. Most roads throughout the country (not just the motorways) are well maintained, so getting around by car is easy. (However, the Slovenes like to drive fast, so if you're a white-knuckled driver at home, you may want to take bus tours instead!)I rented a car for only one day, on impulse, and it was rather expensive, but that was poor planning on my part; reserving a car online before I arrived would have been much cheaper.
