Enjoy the ride

by CCW

While everyone keeps whining that public transporation in Slovenia has gone downhill in recent years, I found that it was possible to get almost everywhere I wanted to go using trains and buses. (I admit that I traveled in the western half of the country; supposedly it's worse in the east.)Because many of the routes were laid out in a more leisurely age, they sometimes seem meandering, but I find it pleasant to potter along admiring the scenery. The train from Ljubljana to Koper makes some spectacular hairpin turns near the coast, affording an excellent view of the church at Hrastovlje (but it doesn't stop there, grr!). The route along the Soca River is famous for its views too. I came into Ljubljana from Trieste, and that's a wonderful trip too: forests, karst landscapes, and gorgeous views across a grassy plain as you approach the city. The trains run on time (yay!), many of the cars...

Adria Airlines

by markyg

When I flew to Bulgaria I took their countries airline (Balkan Air) and that was a less than pleasant experience so I worried taking the Slovenian airline. However, there were no problems. It was cheaper than flying others such as Lufthansa, flights were reliable and service was fine. Not much else to say, but look into this option for additional flights and don't hesitate to fly Adria Airlines. Also, the airport is locate a good ways outside of Ljubljana so be prepared to spend about $25 on a taxi into the city unless you pick up your car rental from the airport.

National Car Rental

by markyg

I would give this car rental place a thumbs up. Prices were good, people working at both the location at the airport and the location in Ljubljana were helpful, and the car ran fine. While I was going to go from Ljubljana back to Ljubljana aiport to pick up the car, the guy at the airport suggested that I get the car in Ljubljana and that the people would pick me up at my hotel. Saved me a bus ride.Driving around Slovenia couldn't have been easier. Much more sane than driving in Italy and France and not as fast as Germany. If you are going in the mountains make sure you get a car with a bigger engine to make it up the hills. We got the Renault Clio and it worked fine. If you are going in the summer make sure you get a car with air conditioning as the temperatures varied from cool to boiling.

Slovenia to Italy

by blint

Slovenia joins on to Italy, and it's really not far to take a trip across the border to Trieste or Venice. You can get a train that goes from Venice to Trieste to Zagreb to Ljubljana to Budapest. I did the whole thing. One the way back all in one go!!!!! You can also travel from Koper, the Slovene coastal town about 21km from Trieste in Italy.

Hop on a plane

by Sweetberry1

You can hop on an Airplane, and fly into Slovenia.. arriving at Brnik Airport. From there, you will be able to get a bus into other parts of Slovenia.Another option is to take the bus into Ljubljana, and from there, you can take the train or the bus to various other cities, or other parts of Europe.

Hitch-hiking haven

by caribou_ire

If ever you find yourself stuck in slovenia, with no money for a bus or train and no way to get where you want to go, all you need to is stand on a roadside with your arm, and thumb extended. Slovenians seem very eager to help out hitch-hikers. Every Slovenian I met was helpful and never had i to wait more than about 10minutes to get picked up, obviously being devilishly good looking helped too. Anyway, from my experiences, Slovenians WILL pick you up if you do decide to hitch, and the chances are they'll be friendly, enjoyable to talk to and might even buy you some cocka and a choco banana!

Bus schedules

by travelbug102

The main bus station in Ljubljana (next to the train station) has a couple of computerized terminals that I found to be extremely helpful. You can find timetables and routes for any two destinations in Slovenia. You can check info for todays' schedule as well as future dates - which is helpful as service on many routes seems to be reduced on weekends.

~Just Cruising Around~

by freya_heaven

Cruises depart from Piran Harbour in the season, destinations include Venice, Croatia, Trieste (Italy). They are mostly daytrips, but it is possibe to find longer trips.Fishing trips also depart from here. There are three international airports Ljubljana - Brnik, Maribor - Orehova vas and Portoroz. A large amount of the Slovenian population rely on public transport ( approx 1/5 ). So rail & bus links are very good around this small country

Local Roads

by KristaB

Slovenia has a very good main network of super modern highways, and that's great. But some areas are really lovely and if you have time, use local roads to get a better view of the landscape and villages. This is one section of the local road from Ljubljana to Koper. Since the new highway was built, the traffic is very moderate, and it became very popular with the bikers - many nice curves to scrape the knees. Villages, mountains, fields, good old traditional restaurants ...
