Rent a boat?

by mtncorg

Trains and buses work well in Slovenia. Ljubljana is the hub. Renting a car can be very worthwhile, however, for those not basing themselves out of the capital city. If you want to hike in the mountains, there is not very many other ways to get to trailheads, other than long approach walks. Plus, you don't get the experience of downshifting around the 50+ hairpin turns of Vrsic Pass - a very beautiful place, indeed. With the car, you gain so much freedom to explore Slovenia - and it is a country that begs you to look under its skin.Slovenia is not very big. I drove from Dovje, which is near Jesenice, in NW Slovenia, to Zagreb - meaning I had to drive the whole way across the country. Fast toll roads - for the most part - will let you cover the route in a little over two hours (a bit less at 2 AM, but that is another story, for another time;-/)Oh, you can rent a boat on Lake Bled too!

Petrol prices as of 30 April 2003

by oja

Eurosuper 98: 191,90 SIT/litreEuro 95: 183,00 SIT/litreDiesel: 162,80 SIT/litreYou cannot buy leaded petrol in Slovenia any more. If you drive one of those old cars (like my ex-VW Jetta) you will have to buy a lead substitute and add it to the petrol.

cycling inslovenia

by sourbugger

The main road through the country from the capital to the Italian border in the top corner with Italy is classed as a motorway. This is despite the fact it is a normal two lane road in places. Do not cycle on it on any account or you will be picked up by the highway patrol and heavily fined.

useful airports from uk

by sourbugger

the airport at the capital is usually very expensive - so here are two alternatives :1) Trieste airport italy. Take the train via trieste to slovenia or the bus to Gorica and pick up a slovenian train at the border in Nova Gorica (about 2km wak from centre of Gorica)2) Use Klagenfurt airport in Austria and enter by train. Either way you will probably save a fortune

If you are in Venice...

by diamond7

Go to Venice by any way. From Venice it's easy going to Piran. You must get a train to Trieste, there are a lot of trains a day and the trip is about 2 hours.Trieste is just in the border of Slovenia. In Trieste leave the station, walk 100 meters and you will find the bus station to Slovenia. Ask for the bus to Pirano (italian name) get it, and... enjoy Piran ..

Getting Around

by canaglic

Public transport is widely used, bus is the preferred way of getting around Slovenia. There are frequent departures and the network has an octopus' reach across the country. With the exception of the ICS express train between Ljubljana and Maribor, travel by rail is best left to sightseers: one of the prettiest rides chugs through the Soca Valley.Driving a car can be a good way to get to some of the most beautiful and isolated towns and villages in Slovenia, and rental prices are reasonable. Rental agencies at Brnik Airport and in Ljubljana have the most competitive rates. The country's tolls and petrol prices are relatively inexpensive. Slovenians drive on the right.

Take the "A" Train at Postojnska Caves

by Martin_S.

This is the train you take when you visit the Postojnska Cave system. It takes you on a 10 minute ride at slightly over a fast walking pace. At the end of your walking trip, you again board the train and it takes you back to your starting point.

Speed limits in Slovenia

by anaiis

After you see the yellow sign with the name of the town or village its 50 kmph (if not stated otherwise). Outside its 90 kmph. Highways - 130 kmph. Do not crash your car driving too fast - sometimes (when there are schools nearby) there are small bumps on the road made to limit your speed. And they are often very badly marked so you don't notice it.
