Vrhnika in Roman times was known as Nauportus and was established in 1st century BC. As the name suggest it was a rivere harbour on a very important trade rout between Rome and eastern provinces. Nauportus was divided into two parts: military (where St. Paul church is) and trade (on the river Ljubljanica banks). Nauportus was destroyed in 5th century by Huns.
Nowdays there is almost nothing to see of the antique Vrhnika, except the remains of the tower of the fort.
