OK, I guess I have to be fair...

by oja

OK, I guess I have to be fair and warn the fellow travellers of ugly things happening on Slovenian borders. I witnessed this shame when I went to meet up with a Belgian friend in Venice to take him to Ljubljana on the train. When we reached the border, the policeman asked him how much money he had on him. My friend told him he didn't have much cash and that he carried a card. At that, the policeman went crazy, pointing out that the card might be void and all. I jumped in saying that the friend would stay with me and that I could leave my number and all, but the bastard wouldn't give in, claiming that the guy needed this much money (an amount set by himself, as I learned later when I rang the ministry of the interior) to stay in Slovenia for a week. It took lots of nerves and negotiations before he could enter, and left an absolutely bitter taste in my mouth. Mind you, my friend was...

Slovenian drivers are not what...

by oja

Slovenian drivers are not what they should be! A recent research has shown that they had a very high opinion of their own driving skills, and a very low opinion of driving skills of others! Quite the opposite to e.g. Scandinavians. Judging by how difficult it is to pass a driving test around here (especially in Ljubljana - ask yours truly how much stress this brought her!) and by the fact that fines are quite high, one would expect better behaviour on the roads. But no... Please be smarter than crazy locals and stick to the rules: 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h outside, 130 km/h on motorways. No driving through the light any other than green. The alcohol limit is 0,5 ‰ (zero if you've got the licence for less than two years).

Mountains are dangerous places, especially in the winter. Take a torch, whistle and compass with you just in case! If you are doing serious hiking or climbing, use a guide. There are cliffs, caves and other pitfalls.

Crime - Despite many people's belief that Slovenia, like all ex-communist countries, is over run my organised crime etc., it is not true. I feel safer walking around Ljubljana than I do London. OK, it is not crime free and you need to be careful flashing around cameras and cash, but that is just common sense.

When the Slovenians say that a portion of the hike is challenging, they are not kidding. It was like mountain climbing to this city boy! lol Here's Tanja demonstrating the proper footing. Kindly, no pictures are available of my delicate dance maneuvers.

Well, this is not a danger, but just a little warning. Be careful not to keep your slovenian money when you go away from Slovenia. Actually, (I don't really undesrtand why..), I still have about 60 USD in slovenian money, and it is impossible to change it in french banks because it is not accepted. So, for example, if you take the plane, don't forget to change your money at the airport before your departure.

Slovenia. On the spot speeding fines!

by JMCS

Slovenia is a very strict country for driving. We had a on the spot fine of 250 euros for driving past the national limit 50km/hr for built areas!

Speed limit ? What speed limit ?

by kazakorange

Not really a danger but most Slovenian drivers drives a bit too fast and never respects speed limits (20 kilometers above is a good average) even in dangerous places (small roads crossing a village).

Ticket fines on trains

by sarahNI

If you get on a train without a ticket, there's a fine of 5000 tolar. If the station you got on at was closed so you couldn't buy one, make sure you tell the conductor and don't get fined..

Q:  My husband and I are planning two nights in July - is it better to base ourselves In Bled or Bohinj, or do one night in each?

Durfun profile photo

A: Personally I liked Bohinj more mainly because it's more remote & natural. You can wander through the woods and discover Slap Savica, by crossing wooden bridges, climbing...
