Bus journey Malaga Airport to Almunecar
  • Tip Rating:
  • We arrived at Malaga Airport and then got a local train into Malaga and the bus from Malaga to Almunecar.
You can book and pay for tickets for bus journeys with Alsina Graells on www.alsa.es .The return fare (Malaga-Almunecar) is 12 Euro with a handling charge of 1.5 Euro. You can avoid the handling charge if you buy your ticket at the kiosk. The web site gives all the journey times of all the services in Spain and the pages are in English.
If you get the local metro train from Malaga airport into Malaga, get off at the penultimate stop, the Renfe main station (do not go to the terminus in Malaga centre). It is about an eight minute walk from upper level of the airport to the station. Price for the ticket was 1.2 Euro (Feb 08) from the ticket machine at the platform. At the Renfe station, it is a short five minute walk to the main bus station. The journey time from Malaga to Almunecar is about 90 minutes and there is no loo on the bus.
On the reverse journey make certain that the local train back to the airport is going to Fuengirola.
Two OAP with luggage and a four year old grandchild managed the journey without a problem.
The train to the airport runs every 30 minutes with a journey time of about 10 minutes. If you have time to kill, then better to do it in the shopping complex above the Renfe station where there are cafes rather than at the main bus station or the airport.

    Fly Monarch
We always used to Fly Monarch airline to Granada. I have always found them efficient, friendly and reasonably priced. You can grab scheduled flights, choosing your dates for outgoing and return to suit so they don't have to be weekly/fortnightly (link below). **Very annoyingly, they have recently stopped their route to Granada, leaving us with the awful Ryanair, but still fly to Malaga**.

Flying to Granada rather than Malaga for the Costa Trpical, is much preferred as Granada airport is small (let's hope it stays like that) and much less hassle than the larger Malaga arrival where they are currently building a second terminal and is increasingly taking on the appearance of a posher Gatwick with prices to match. (2 sandwiches, 2 glasses of wine and some fruit, 24 euros last time). At Malaga there is alot of walking to get out of the airport and finding your hire car cn be a hellish experience; whereas at Granada you are off the plane and out of the small airport terminal in a jiffy.

I have also found it to be cheaper than many of the other budget, 'cattle herding airlines' that I have frequented before.

**Update-Monarch lived up to their reputation for a friendly and efficient service. It's nice to be able to recommend a good company.
