LOS DOLMENES DE ANTEQUERA

    the Dolmens

The Dolmens in Antequera LOS DOLMENES DE ANTEQUERA are considered to be the finest example of this type of megalithic construction in Europe. They date back to the Copper Age and prove the existence of civilization in the area 4500 years ago. These burial grounds are noteworthy for their size, with stone slabs weighing up to 180 tons. The Menga Dolmen is thought to date back to the early stage of the Copper Age, around 2500 B.C.; the Viera Dolmen to approximately 2000 B.C. and the Romeral Dolmen to 1800 B.C.

Located just before you enter the town of Antequera, the Dolmens appear to be huge mounds of earth and you wouldn't even know there was anything there. Only because Stace knew it was there that we knew about it. But unfortunately, most of the grounds were closed as they were working on one of the Dolmens. A man working there explained that they had found a new vein in the tunnels, which was very exciting, but for now closed to the public.

    CHURCHES OF ANTEQUERA
  • Tip Rating:
  • Antequera is blessed with a number of Churches and Convents. I have never seen so many in such a small town. The most impressive of Antequera's religious architecture is the Church of Real Colegiata de Santa Maria La Mayor and the Church of San Sebastian, both from the Renaissance period. From the Baroque period the Churches of El Carmen, Los Remedios, Santiago, Madre de Dios, San Jose', Belen and San Juan de Dios also stand out.

The Convento De La Trinidad, Siglo XVII ( 17th Century ) was my favourite church/convent building.

    La Peña de los Enamorados
  • Tip Rating:
  • Overlooking the valley and town of Antequera is an enormous slab of limestone resembling a human-like face of an Indian Warrior, lying down. Rising 880 metres, it is called LA PENA DE LOS ENAMORADOS or Lovers' Leap. Local Legend tells of a forbidden love affair between a beautiful Moorish girl and a young Christian man. They were driven to the top of the cliff by Moorish soldiers, but rather than renounce their love, they hurled themselves off the cliff. Thus the idea for
    Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. HeHe!

    ROMAN THERMAE OF SANTA MARIA
  • Tip Rating:
  • Through the Giant's Arch ( Arco de los Gigantes ) and to the left of the Real Colegiata de Santa Maria, there are various newly discovered remains dating back to Roman times. This area is known as the ROMAN THERMAE OF SANTA MARIA. Here were once a complex of thermae or Roman Baths. Archeological digs are finding more and more wonderful surprises.

    ARCO DE LOS GIGANTES
  • Tip Rating:
  • Built in 1585 by Felipe II, the ARCO DE LOS GIGANTES or "Arch of the Giants" leads to the medieval Alcazaba and Church of Real Colegiata de Santa Maria La Mayor.
Spectacular views of the city can be seen from this area of Antequera, which was by the way quite a climb. But we were well rewarded with wonderful views, especially of "La Pena de los Enamorados" or "Lovers' Leap".

    COLEGIATA SANTA MARIA LA MAYOR
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria la Mayor - COLEGIATA SANTA MARIA LA MAYOR is a prime example of Renaissance building in Andalucia and is outstanding for the quality of its construction and its desighn. It illustrates the co-existence between late Gothic and the new style which was then beginning in Italy and dates back to the years 1514 to 1550.

Stace, Hans and I marvelled at the beauty of this building, perched at the very top of a hill overlooking Antequera. It is unfortunate that we were not able to go inside as workers were doing a major renovation of the Church. One worker did let us take a peek though through the massive front door. It was completely gutted. That is something that will take a while to finish.

    ANCESTRAL HOMES
  • Tip Rating:
  • The nobility settled during the Renaissance and the Baroque periods, in Antequera. They built magnificent ANCESTRAL HOMES of which lasting testimonies remain. One of the most notable is the Palace of Najera which is now the Municipal Museum. Remarkable examples of Baroque are the house of the Marquis of La Pena, that of the Baron of Sabasona ( one of the most original examples of a "framed facade" characteristic of the city ).
The accompanying picture is of an especially beautiful Baroque home, complimented by the green foliage of an Orange Tree.

    STORK ON CHURCH TOWER
  • Tip Rating:
  • After coming down from the 'Arch of the Giants' and the Castillo, we came upon a lovely square with benches, where we rested and had something to drink. All of a sudden Stace says "Look up there. It's a stork nest" Sure enough, high atop the church tower, there was a stork in a nest built especially for them. Cool or what! These are the best pictures I could get, but I'm sure Hansi and Stace with their zoom lenses probably got better ones.

    A City of Towers
  • Tip Rating:
  • Like many Spanish cities, you will be amazed by the number of churches and convents in Antequera. Unfortunately most of these buildings are now hemmed in by modern buildings, making their viewing rather difficult, and photos of them almost impossible! Here is a selection of some of the nicest ones. Many are still undergoing restoration.
