The best beach in Ayamonte is Isla Canela, a sandy island close to the city, and connected by a small bridge. Heavy construction allows a few hotels and many apartments lining the beach at a smart distance.

The marina of Ayamonte seems to be special for its location - it is rather central, with the city unfolding around it. never saw many boats there, which means that the economical conditions may be less attractive than its look.

I never used the beaches near Ayamonte, because they seem identical to those in the Portuguese side of Guadiana river. Warm water, calm surf, a large stripe of sand, and some wind, are the common characteristics.

The most remarkable detail in Ayamonte's main church is a virgin's image from the 16Th century, venerated since then. A legend says that it was discovered by fishermen in the sea, close to Castro Marim

If you have a car or motorcycle, and are spending holidays in the south-eastern corner of Portugal, it is a nice little trip to go to the Spanish side.
Andalucia is the name of the area on the Spanish side, and it is famous for white villas, lots of flowers and palm trees.
Also good sandy beaches can be found near the border, you don't need to drive to the nearest tourist place.

If you have a car, drive a little bit further away from Ayamonte (towards Spain, the same one and only main highway. You will see a big bridge and then you are passing the border of Portugal and Spain.
You arrive to the Andalucia area of Spain which is very beautiful. The scenery is beautiful, but the houses are very pretty indeed too. People keep them in good condition; shining pure white in the clear sunshine towards the blue sky. Flowers, other plants and palm trees make it even more beautiful.

The far south of Spain can be warm in January. The temperature reached 25C in mid-January, despite Ayamonte being on the Atalntic side of the Strait of Gibraltar.
The town is quiet, and the resorts of Canela and Cristina are largely empty. For northern Europeans looking for winter sun, this is a more interesting place than the Canary Islands.

The cobbled square is lined with palm trees, and occupied by small groups of men just passing the time. One ends of the square opens towards the Main road where the bridge crosses the tidal creek. The other end leas into the centre of the town with its windy shopping streets. There are a few interesting restaurants along the sides.
By the bridge is a small, smelly zoo. The conditions did not inspire us to visit.

A beautiful promenade along the harbour which is lined with palm trees called the Paseo de la Ribera. On roadside are among the regional residential buildings some aristocratic mansions and palaces.

In a city thay is far from being very beautiful, the main square makes the difference. Small but well balanced, the combination of typical construction, tiles and garden becomes very harmonious.
