Barbate de Franco Things to Do

  • Birdwatching

If birdwatching is your thing in Andalusia, then I would strongly recomend contacting Stephen Daly of Andalusian Guides. Higueral de la Oliva, 11160, Barbate, Cadiz Province, Andalusia, Espania. 00 34 956 432316, 00 34 647 713641 mobile. Our time with Stephen was excellant and the lunch times at local restaurants were an added bonus. The variety of...

  • Cabo de Trafalgar Lighthouse

A little way west from Canos de Meca is Cabo de Trafalgar. Yes, The Trafalgar. The only attractions here are the dunes, the sea, the lighthouse, great big masses of sand steeped up to the lighthouse that stands, somewhat dilapidated, on the brow of a hill. There's a few restaurants and cafes on the way (like, three), none are worth bothering about....

  • The Modern Port

The modern port is at the other side of the city in direction to Trafalgar or Conil. We did this photo from the top of the road when we were already at the Natural Park of Breña

  • Gardens

Not many but we founded a few squares with nice vegetation, gardens always make a city look nicer at least in my opinion. The one at the town hall was nice with different styles of Palms.

On the Plaza Inmaculada, just in a corner we founded the Iglesia Parroquial de San Paulino, I love towers, so I could not stop making photos of it. It was closed by the time we passed as it was the 1st of January.

Barbate de Franco Restaurants

  • Italian food and Italian personality

This place looks like a rather dull cafe from the outside, but step through the door and you're in a lively and very very popular Italian restaurant. It's owned by an equally lively Italian guy who will take you through the menu and give you some recommendations. Go for the pasta dishes and ask for the waiter/waitress' opinion. Plenty of seafood...

  • The classiest, best restaurant in Canos

This is potentially the classiest place in Canos. The staff are very friendly, speak English but were happy enough to put up with my attempts in Spanish. I wanted this to be a special meal as it was the last night of the holiday and also my boyfriend's birthday. Price was very reasonable, given the high quality of the food. The style of food is...

Barbate de Franco Off The Beaten Path

  • Cabo de Trafalgar

If you drive a few kilometres along the coast to the west of Barbate you will reach Cabo de Trafalgar. It was off this point that Nelson had his great sea-victory over the combined French and Spanish navies in October 1805 and effectively ended both those navies as a force to be reckoned with.Nowadays this area is known for for watersports, and we...

  • Sherry adverts dominating the landscape

All over this region of Andalucia you'll pass great big signs, symbols for the different sherries made here. They have become an iconic part of the landscape. This one is for Tio Pepe I think.

  • Parque Natural de la Brena

Make ure you take a walk through the Nature Reserve that lies at the far end of Canos. Mind your legs though, those bushes are scratchy!! Beautiful scenery and just moments away from the beach you really feel like you're in the wilds. But your still only 5 minute walk from your room!!
