Taxi transfer from Malaga airport costs about 12 euros and takes approx 15 mins. There is a very clean and efficient train service from arroyo that goes both directions along the coast with transfers to other places inland.

Avoid taxi's just like any other busy place, local bus services are especially cheap, as is the half horly train service that connects all points between Malaga and Fuengirola ( including the airport ). Consider car rental but beware of hidden rental costs ( daily insurance, distance etc) compare prices carefully among local firms, always enquire about special weekend rates.

The local bus service (Portillo) is pretty good, but does take time. From the coast road in Benalmadena there is a regular service to the local towns of Torremolinos, Fuengirola and to Malaga city centre (including a stop by the train and bus stations). You can also catch the bus to other towns including Marbella, Algeciras, Estepona or Mijas.
The local bus for Benalmadena only is the orange bus. The Portillo buses are white/blue/green.
If you will be taking the Portillo bus a lot, buy a 'bono' card at the tobacconists. It costs about 2 euros and saves you 1/3 on each one way fare.
Benalmadena to Torremolinos is currently about 1.20 but with the bono card, it costs 81 cents... so you see how quickly the card pays for itself. It is like a pay-as-you-go phone. Charge it up as required!
All bus fares in the region are one way tickets only.

You can get a taxi from Malaga Airport to Benalmadena outside the airport but in summer there are lots of queues. Its best to pre-book online so that you know what you will pay and there are no surprises. www.malagaairporttaxi.net provide this type of service and we have used them several times.

Trains run every 30 minutes between Malaga city centre and Fuengirola, stopping at Malaga Airport, Torremolinos, Benalmadena (Arroyo de la Miel) and several smaller stops en route.
Up to date timetables can be found HERE
The following information was correct at the time of our visit in February 2011:
Trains leave Malaga Centro-Alameda station on the hour and half past the hour from 05:30 to 22:30 each day.
The nearest station to Benalmadena is Arroyo de la Miel. From this station it is a downhill walk of approximately 15 minutes to Benalmadena coastal strip and a little further to the marina.
Torremolinos to Arroyo de la Miel takes 7 minutes and costs 1.55 Euros.
Malaga Airport to Arroyo de la Miel takes approximately 18 minutes and costs 1.65 Euros.
Malaga Centro-Alameda to Arroyo de la Miel takes approximately 32 minutes and costs 1.65 Euros.
Trains are modern, with TV screens on board that show the name of the next stop and the time to the next stop. Additionally, stops are announced in both Spanish and English.
Tickets can be purchased from interactive touch-screen machines at each station. You can choose from several language options available on screen, machines accept both notes and coins and change is given.
Use your ticket to enter the platform via a turnstile (which validates your ticket). Note: keep your ticket at hand as you'll need it at the end of your journey to exit the turnstile at your destination station.
