Carnaval in Cadiz City
Once every year in February Cadiz city holds its own Carnival where Chirigotas sing satirical songs and the people get dressed up and go on la marcha (a big drinking session) all night long in the streets. They dress up in strange costumes (see photo- though of course I know none of them!!!!!)
Not even the rest of the Spaniards can understand all of what the chirigota groups are singing about because they sing with a strong Gaditano accent about Cadiz. If you fancy seeing how good your gaditano listening skills are, you can go and see the finals of the chirigota and Coro competition. This year (2006) the finals were on Friday 24th Feb and the 25th everyone went out in fancy dress. On the Sunday there is a parade of floats and things in the morning for the children and 'unofficial' chirigotas that move around the streets singing their own songs. you can go and see the Coros (Choirs) singing on Sunday. All this is repeated on Monday where the streets are once again full of people drinking and enjoying themselves and on Tuesday they burn a large doll which is a representation on the god of Carnaval in Plaza San Antonio. The festivities last all week.
Although other towns in the area may have their own carnival singing contests the biggest is in Cadiz city.
Please see my travelogue and Local Cutom tips for more photos and explanations.
THIS YEAR CARNAVAL IS FROM 31ST JANUARY UNTIL 11TH FEBRUARY (2008)
Carneval in Cadiz is a sight to see! It's the Spanish celebration of "fat tuesday" Here they dress up in costumes (as americans would at Halloween). Everyone gathers around the City's center where the festivities are. During the day there is a parade and other shows. At night botellions everywhere! Everyone settles in the plazas and drinks and has a good time.
