Many people think that Plaza Capchinos, which owes its present name to the convent founded on it, is the most beautiful square of the city of Cordoba. Is true that it is a quiet and mystic. The essence of this square is the crucified Christ that stands at its center. The monument was erected in 1794 by the Capuchin friars and is protected by a small iron gate. Originally called Christ of the Grievance and Mercy. Because the lamps that light up at night, popularly called the Cristo de los Faroles.

This is a very popular image of Christ. It is on the Plaza de los Capuchinos, named after the convent of the Franciscan order which is in one of the sides of the square.
The name of the image was Cristo de los Desagravios y Misericordia, but it is called Cristo de los Faroles due to the lanterns around Him. The author was Juan Navarro Leon and it dates back to 1794.

This monument was made by the Capuchin-Franciscan order in 1794, and crafted by Juan Navarro Leon. It´s situated in a small square, the main feature is a stone cross with a Christ crucified surrounded by streetlamps. The Chirst is actually known as the Christo de los Faroles due to the lanterns that ornate the monument. It´s specailly venerate by the Cordovans with offerings of candles and flowers.

There is an 50s Spanish movie starred by one of the most popular flamenco singer of his time with this title, El Cristo de los Faroles. So you can imagine that this image is in the popular and even sentimental culture of the city, beyond any artistic value of the XVIIIth century sculpture itself. In fact, I dont think it is a good sculpture: in my opinion, proportions of the body are not right... but the whole square with the Christ sculpture in its middle and the lamposts around it is charming, especially at nights, when the lamposts are on.
    llega pasito a pasito
    la mujer de mis amores

In the same square you can see a beautiful statue of Cristo de los Faroles ( Christ of Lanterns). Really this is one of most known places in Cordoba and without any doubts, one of most famous Christ's statues in all Spain!!.Don't miss a visit here during nightime and see all the lanterns with the lights on.
