Garcia Lorca wrote Bodas de Sangre in 1932 based on the real events that took place in and around the Cortijo del Fraile in Cabo de Gata.
The actual 'Crime of Nijár' was committed in the summer of 1928.
On the eve of her wedding, Francisca convinces her lover and cousin Francisco to run away with her. Francisca's older sister, Carmen and her husband José Pérez - brother of the abandoned bridegroom, lay in wait for the fleeing lovers. A struggle occurred, José Pérez wrested Francisco's rifle from him and shot his brother three times leaving him dead. Carmen tried to strangle her sister leaving her for dead, she fortunately survived.
Today, El Cortijo de Fraile is abandoned and tragically falling to the ground. There is talk about a project to purchase and restore it but whether it will happen in time.. we'll see.
Today you can visit the ruins of the Cortijo by taking the dirt track from Rodalquilar, past the gold mine and carry on for about 2.5Km until you reach a flat plain and a crossroads surrounded by Piteras (Century plants). Turn right and follow the road for another km or two until you reach the Cortijo.
If you turn left instead of right you will arrive at the Cortijo de Requena where there is a marked walk crossing the mountains to La Isleta del Moro.
