If you're from a snowy country then you propbably won't think much of the Sierra Nevada, but if you're not then it's a great activity to do in the winter if you're in the area. Go to the fully functioning resorts where you can ski or get lessons. It's a great alternative activity in the south of Spain.

Of course cycling is huge all over Spain but Granada has hills and mountains!
There are popular routes all over this area, even the Alhambra hill!
Go up past the famous monument, you'll get to the city cemetery (where Republicans were shot during the Civil War) carry on higher and paths snake all over the mountainside. Red squirrels leap from pine tree to tree ( exciting for an English person who usually only gets to see American grey interlopers!)

The Sierra Nevada ski resort is 30 km from Granada. These slopes are popular with Portuguese, as well as Spanish, skiers. Problem is this is a region suffering from drought (check out the low level of the reservoirs). The local paper (Ideal) reported that 2008 was the worst ski season in 10 years due to lack of snow and unusually high winds.
They do use artificial snow but check out the current conditions carefully.

Tickets to watch Granada CF football team are a lot cheaper than for similiar level clubs in, for example, England. They play alternate Sundays kickoff at 5pm.
They regularly have crowds of 6000 and nearly made the play-offs in 2007/8 season. Wear red and white!

]Sierra Nevada is a nice skiing station. The distance makes it the favorite to Portuguese, and the proximity of the beauties and life of Granada do help a lot. I've never been there in skiing peak season and don't know how the traffic conditions, but I do believe that staying in town and going there for some hours would be my option, if possible.

A Long and Undulating day again walking on a mixture of quiet roads and
earthen tracks, but through very pleasant countryside.

Nowhere for coffee / lunch so make sure that you have a good breakfast
before leaving in the morning and pack plenty of water as well as Good
    Supply of snacks.

We pre-booked our accommodation in Cordoba so that we weren't messing around
late in the evening when we got there and I would recommend anyone walking
the route to do the same.

Lots of choice of restaurants for your evening meal
