No snow!

The Sierra Nevada ski resort is 30 km from Granada. These slopes are popular with Portuguese, as well as Spanish, skiers. Problem is this is a region suffering from drought (check out the low level of the reservoirs). The local paper (Ideal) reported that 2008 was the worst ski season in 10 years due to lack of snow and unusually high winds.
They do use artificial snow but check out the current conditions carefully.

Pedal past La Alhambra

Of course cycling is huge all over Spain but Granada has hills and mountains!
There are popular routes all over this area, even the Alhambra hill!
Go up past the famous monument, you'll get to the city cemetery (where Republicans were shot during the Civil War) carry on higher and paths snake all over the mountainside. Red squirrels leap from pine tree to tree ( exciting for an English person who usually only gets to see American grey interlopers!)

The first Snow

If you're from a snowy country then you propbably won't think much of the Sierra Nevada, but if you're not then it's a great activity to do in the winter if you're in the area. Go to the fully functioning resorts where you can ski or get lessons. It's a great alternative activity in the south of Spain.

Equipment: Ski's
Poles
Cold weather waterproof clothes!
