Gypsy Fortune Tellers

Don't let anyone tell you your fortune or give you little bundles of herbs because they want money in return. This happens often around the cathedral and certain areas near Plaza Nueva. The best policy is to ignore these people.

Albaicin

A safe place during the day, but I would not suggest during the night specially alone. It's very unsafe when it becomes dark.

The streets are very peculiar, and it’s easy to get lost. It’s like a giant labyrinth!

Some suggestions

Generalife Gardens, Alhambra

Try to avoid driving inside of the city, or parking.

The best is to leave the car at the Alhambra parking even if it is expensive.

In only one day you do not see Granada, but you can have a glimpse of what it is... so you may want to come in the future to explore it again, (that’s my problem I never stop exploring it lol)

For me the ideal would be 3 to 4 days

Granada: Caution - Bandits

Caution: bandits in Granada.
We went through the Albaycin quarter in order to arrive on the lookout point. A young (about 20 years old) spanish man with black sun glasses (dressed with a modern blue jacket ? Hip-Hop-outlook) tried to get the photo camera of my husband. But he could not do it. Then he threatened me with a very long knife (no folding knife) and got my backpack. The police of Granada worked perfectly in this case. Unfortunately no photo of this man was with the pictures of the police. We think 1 - 2 young other young men observed us permanently and contacted the bandit. Thus - into no lonely lanes in Granada, even if these are still so romantic alway be carefully. I hope such a thing never passes you! Krissss

A really common thing in Granada and other towns with tourists. Especially around the Cathedral they will come up to you and try to force a sprig of rosemary in your hand, Saying "Toma! Un regalo!" Take it! Its a gift! You could take it and recieve a "blessing" from them but if you do you have to give them money. But rosemary is a good thing, you can see some flamenco dancers with it in their hair. Just be careful, also anytime people are close to you KNOW where your wallet is or it might dissapear....

Of all the cities we visited in Spain, this was the only one that I saw homeless or street people - however they seemed very young, probably due to Granada having the University. I didn't find them to be threatening, but some people may get a little nervous around them, especially after reading so many guidebooks about being mugged.

The old gypsy caves still exhist in Granada. We did not visit, but our guide warned that they were very interesting but if you visit don't go alone, don't go after dark, and don't take money or passports.

On this advice we just stayed away.

It's very hot there and the sun is everywhere. Drink a lot of water, use a sun protector cream and use a hat.
