A mountainous region north of Marbella that was made into a natural park in 1989, because of its diversity of fauna and flora. In my opinion a good thing as it will help to keep the area free from the developement that has affected so much of the coastal regions of Andalucia.
The area has an average height of 1,100 meters and its highest peak, el Pico de la Torrecilla reaches 1,919 meters.
The area has many fine walks and the village of Istan is a good starting point for many, if you are lucky you will encounter some of its wildlife, Ibex, viper, frogs, peregrine falcon as well as many other bird species. It is also the home of the rare pinsapo pine which along with Sierra de Ronda natural park hold the only large quantities of this tree in Europe.
The following villages are located in or very near the park... Istan, Monda, Tolox, Yunquera, El Burgo, Ronda and Igualeja
