Frigiliana is an attractive village in Andalucia, located about 50 km east of Malaga. After hiring a car in Malaga airport, we stopped here for a few hours to break the drive to the Sierra Nevada mountains. The village is easy to reach, at the foot of the Sierra de Tejeda mountains, just a few kilometres in from the motorway, with Nerja the closest big town.
The village was the scene of one of the last battles between Muslims and Christians in the 16th century, an event commemorated in plaques on the walls in the town. The old part of the village is especially pretty, with picturesque winding & narrow streets. This old section is very steep and there are a couple of miradors on the uppermost streets, offering great views of the region and the Mediterranean.
There are also plenty of restaurants and cafes in the village, making it an ideal place to break a journey or for a half-day of sightseeing. The surrounding hills looked a great place to go hiking, though we didn't have time to pursue this, as we had to move on after a few hours.
