Mercado Atarazanas is a large, busy place near the river and just off Malaga's main avenue. Somehow it reminded me of the bazaars of Marrakech, with its ripe smells and ventilated walls. It is divided into large warehouse-sized sections. The right-hand side is filled to the brim with many colourful fruit and vegetable stalls. There is also a large hall filled with meat and fish sellers. And cheeses. And some bread.
A great place to get your sandwich provisions first thing in the day. It seemed to open early in the morning and close early afternoon.
What to buy: Cheap, plentiful, fresh groceries.

Vibrant food market set in an attractive, turn of the century market hall. Fruit, veggies, herbs, fish, meat, 100's of olives, cold meats etc.....nice to grab a selection and head to the beach. Stalls close by 2pm.

This shop is an Aladdins cave of creative materials, paints, inks, canvasses, clay, brushes, tools etc......and some brilliant art books. Do not be mislead by the big range of cleaning products it also seems to display in its windows!

Do not be put off by this shops' exterior. It was founded in the 1940's and I don't think its had a refit since then! HOWEVER, in the spring/summer, they stock the greatest range of handmade espadrilles, all around the 20 euro mark.

Clothes and gift shops, some fast food and local restaurants and a Eroski supermarket are located in this galleries, just 2 minutes from the coach station (or 5 from the train station).
Really handy if you have to make a short connecting stop in Malaga - or if you miss your bus and must wait for the next one. LOL

If you like to shop you must go here. My credit card and I had some fun. The stores were great and the prices were even better. I got so many great deals. My favorite stores were Zara, Blanco, Stradivarius, Mango, Bershka, Tact-O and Pull and Bear.
What to buy: EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!! (like i did)
What to pay: Everything is much cheaper in spain. A pair of boots from Zara in Spain cost $45 and if you bought the same ones in the US it would cost you at least $100

We were close to the Plaza de Sigia(?) when wandering around during the short period of time we had before catching our bus to Marbella. Unfortunately I don't remember the shop name, but just about everything was handmade and it was difficult to make a selection!
What to buy: Here is one of my purchases...It's a pin, and I get lots of compliments on it and lots of questions about exactly what the picture represents--I must confess, I don't know! But I love it and wear it often.
Handmade, strange pic, conversation piece!
What to pay: Prices were very reasonable, especially for handmade items, but I'm sorry, I can't remember specifics. Prices in Spain in general are excellent as a rule.

Ok, I normally do NOT spend time or money walking through shops and buying stuff that let's face it - it is NOT necessary.
But, if you want to buy something, then Andalucia is a pretty good place - cheaper than what I've seen in other countries. Apart from the clothing, nice souvenirs, and I would definitely go for one of those Andalucian dresses. :-))) Just to "melt in" the atmosphere.
Food, drinks - also quite normally priced. Except in Marbella but... that makes sense given the fact it is a place created for "well-off budgets"

Don`t be ashamed to leave your buying of presents to the last minute. The Picasso shop in the airport departure lounge is worth a visit. Brightly painted Andalucian ceramics catch the eye.
