  • There are two train stations in Malaga.

When catching the train into Malaga you will arrive at the main train station, which is located out of the town centre.

You then walk along the street for a couple of minutes and enter the local train station, where you can then catch the train into the centre of town (only a few minutes trip)

It was a little confusing and not well sign posted when we were there.

In my opinion the best way to get around the sights of Malaga is the Open top bus tour. 13 Euros will buy you a hop on hop off ticket which is valid for 24 hours. You will be given a set of headphones to listen to the commentary (in several different languages) and a handy map of the City. The views of the coastline as you go up the hill to the Gibralfaro castle are stunning.

  • In Málaga there are two principal Bus Stations.

One is at the historic center, at the entrance of the Port of Málaga, but not all the buses of long distances begin here. Some begin here and have the second stop at the principal bus station. I think nearly all buses that goes to the villages of Malaga, like Fuengirola, Marbella, Ronda, Mijas... and other importants places in Andalucia, like Granada, have their first stop here. I will ask.

The principal is at the center, near the train station. Paseo de los Tilos s/n. Near "El Corte Ingles" and "Eroski" ( to big malls in the town )

They have a good web page.

  • There are Taxi stops, but you can always stop a Taxi in the street when you need it. The minimun you will have to pay is, I think 2.50 euros, than from there the taximeter will count. Every taxi have taximetre, but if you are going out of the center of Malaga they will use a standar tarif they have in a paper.

  • the nearest train station you will find in Malaga is in the begining of Alameda Principal (at each sides of the river), near the Post Office. From there you can get the train that goes to Fuengirola (stops in airport, PRINCIPAL TRAIN STATION, Torremolinos, Benalmadena..)
If you get of in the 2 stop, at the "Malaga Renfe" you will be at the principal train station from you can get trains to go nearly everywhere .. Madrid, Cordoba, Granada, ... there you will also find the principal Bus Station. The train is much better than the bus, but for going to some places you will better get the bus.

You can nearly go to everywhere with the bus.
The most urbans busses have a stop at "Alameda Principal" in the center of the city. From there you will have to choose the number of the bus you need.

Line 35. will take you to Gibralfaro
    Line 11. to the Bullring

    FARES:
    ordinary ticket - 0.85 euros
    (single, payment on Bus)
    multitravel (10 trips) - 5.70 euros
(prepaid on smartcard) ... you have to pay 1.80 for the plastic card for multitravel

POINTS OF SALE for smartcard in any ESTANCO (places where you see tabaco and newspaper are sale)

From Malaga airport you obviously need to get to some other location. Unless your holiday includes airport transfers or you take a taxi, (which can be expensive), you will need to get to Malaga's main Coach or Railway stations.

Out through the glass exit doors from the airport arrivals terminal (oposite the refreshments bar). Turn right and about 30 metres along is a bus stop.

The Nr. 19 from the airport to Malaga runs half hourly from 07.30 until midnight, and from Malaga to the airport from 06.30 until 23.30.
(journey time around 15 minutes) and only costs €1. The destination blind on the bus will usually say 'Centro'.

From the main Coach and Railway stations, you can book onwards to your chosen resort still more cheaply than taking a taxi for the whole journey.

Example: A taxi from the airport to Nerja costs between €70-€80.
Example: Alsina Graells coach company only charge around €3.60 to Nerja, which is a 1.25 hour journey!

The main Railway station is adjacent to the Coach station.

    How about buses?

  • Well, it is true that most people travel in Spain by train (Ok, the TALGO trains are amazing) but backpackers don't really need the luxury. A nice-price is a BETTER choice.
    So... Buses are just fine.
... I managed to get from Gerona/Girona to Malaga by using this means of transport.
What you might need to know is that... There are many different companies and each one has its own routes.
For example, ALSA holds the line: Madrid-Barcelona. DAIBUS is the one you'll use for reaching Malaga.

  • To get to the airport, you can take the public transport or taxi. If you prefer cheap option - then bus 19 is for you - it goes all the way to the airport.
Alternatively, you can take a taxi which should cost you about 15 euros and takes 20 mins to get to the airport (if you're going from the historical centre)
