White houses climbing the hills, compose an unspoilt image of Mediterranean architecture, with a taste of Maghreb.
We were so "cooked" that, after a swim, we left quickly to a milder place. But, next time, with air conditioned in the car, we will stop and look around.
We did! Nothing much to add, unless... apartments. many!

A few minutes before arriving in Mojacar, passing in Sorbas, we were stopped by road works. We had no air conditioned, and the dust was so strong, that we had to keep the windows closed all the time. The temperature inside the car went over 60º C, for sure, during... I say almost ten minutes, Fernanda says... half an hour!
Doesn't matter! We were so coocked, that seeing the ocean, we start undressing straight away in the car, stopped... anywhere and... jumped to the water. Only afterwards, looking behind, we noticed that it was a rough pebble beach, and the car... needed to be parked.

It is not a nice beach, but... it's a beach.
The sand is dusty and hard, the sea was rough when we were there (red flag), but the weather is hot, hot, hot.
The heavy construction in the area shows that a lot of people loves it.

We have been cycling for years and noticed a lot of teams use Mojacar as a base for the winter training camps, if its good enough for the professionals then its good enough for us. We rented two high end road bikes (MTB are available too) from rockroadnsurfadventures situated on the playa, they took us on the first day on a guided tour of some local routes and they next four days we headed out on our own, we also got invited out on there club rides. Well the cycling was fantastic! The road to Carboneres is awesome, hard work to climb the mountain but the views are amazing! All in all one of the best places I have cycled, people and other riders where so friendly and the beach bars are a great place to relax after a hard days riding.

The weekly market is held on Wednesday mornings up in the Mojacar Pueblo. If you can walk there or get a bus, do so, because Parking can be a problem.
It is a busy full market with just about everything on display that anyone could ever want or need.
We were attracted to a ceramics stall displaying not the usual highly coloured mediterranean "pots" but all kinds of domestic and decorative wares in the more subdued colours of northern Europe. We bought several items from the stall and discovered it was run by an Irish couple - Roger Walker and Breda Lowth.
Because our Welsh ceramicist friend was with us we got into conversation and were invited to visit them at their home Cariatiz, near Sorbas.
They offered pottery and painting courses at their home and if you should come across them and feel like a day at the Potter's wheel or with a paintbrush in your hand I think it would be a day to remember.

Mojacar has 2 parts, the old spanish/arabish part with white houses in it on the hill, and the modern tourist village on the beach. Both are great, however the beach part is similar to other spanish beach villages. But the old Mojacar is something special. You will find a lot of small and kind streets in it with small and kind shops. From top of the village the view is breath-taking, you can see the only "Western style" desert in Europe. Really, it is a must to go there.

We visited Mojacar again in august 2006, myself, my hubby, my two teenage daughters, and two of their friends. I tried my best to keep them happy with shopping trips, days at the beach, as much nightlife as you can find in Mojacar etc, etc (it wasn't easy). We booked another trip with discovery tours (through e.mailing Mary who runs the show), and decided on a trip to secluded beaches. We picked the worst day in the history of Almeria, weather wise. It was windy and spitting with rain early on. Mary gave us the option to cancel and rearrange for later in the holiday, but we decided to go ahead. We set off through the mountains, which was fantastic. We drove through tiny villages which you would not normally see. We stopped and chatted to an old bloke on his donkey (which was 21 years old!) and then stopped for tapas and a drink, which Mary paid for, in another small village. We then trecked on, and saw a cave with paw prints from a large cat, along with a variety of beetles, tiny owls, and various birds. Mary did her best to find us a scorpion, but they were shy!! We reached the coast, and visited some of the best beaches I have ever seen. Some of them were nudist beaches, which was quite hilarious with the windy conditions!!!!!!! Food, wine, beer and pop were provided. We wanted for nothing, and were constantly asked if there was anything we wanted to do, or anywhere we wanted to go. When the holiday was over, I asked the girls what they had liked best, and all four said the Discovery Tours trip. DO IT!!!!!!! When we visit Mojacar again, I will defo book another one.

We have just come back from Mojacar Southern Spain. We went for two weeks and the day we arrived we wasn't very keen. As the holiday progressed it got better and we ended up buying an apartment out......

A Moorish village in Almeria that spills down the hill overlooking the Mediterranean sea and the nice beaches. The place is a tangle of enchanting narrow Casba types of streets which offer a surprise...

Hot, hot, hot, only the sea allowed a little relief. The white houses climbing the hills rival with Tarifa, in its Moroccan look. Nowhere else in Europe we felt so close to the Sahara.

Mojacar - corner of enchantment

When we first went to Mojacar few of our family and friends had ever heard of it. Some thought it must be in Africa. We knew it was one of the places that claims to be the birth place of Walt Disney,...

This was one of the trips 8 girls made. Our hotel was lovely, and service very good. However the area was very quiet. Unfortunately I took no photos of area itself
