Nerja Comes Alive At Night
I was amazed at how this little town came alive at night. As you walk around the day the streets are marginally filled with people. As the afternoon siesta approaches things start to close down a bit and people head off to the beaches and back to the hotels to nap. As the evening and dinner hours approach the people come out to roam the streets looking for places to eat and drink. The plaza at the Balcon de Europa is bustling with people at midnight and is the perfect place to people watch, look at the moon over the ocean or enjoy a late night ice cream.

19th hole.: 19th hole. (Off Avda Castilla Perez)
British Cafe/Bar. The 19th hole got its name of 'God's waiting room' due the amount of elderly clientelle that use the place. I don't know whether that is politically correct or not in todays idiom. This pub is actually advertised as a tapas bar? However, they do serve a good Sunday lunch and is well worth a visit or two at any time. As the name suggests, there is a good golfing presence here. Price range: Good value for money. Atmosphere: Cosy but can be a little 'cliquey'. Theme: Tastefully decorated with a minimal golfing theme. opening times: Mid morning until around 11:00 pm. Disabled notes: Steps down to the bar need to be noted.

    Casual.

Anchor Inn: The Anchor Inn (Calle Ruperto Arduez)
Irish Bar. Another bar that is a bit out of the way in Nerja is the Anchor Inn. It is a pleasant little bar but hardly Irish. Where they got that idea from I do not know. I would have thought a nautical theme might have been more appropriate with the name of The Anchor but they may be just 'climbing on the bandwagon' with the current trend of Irish pubs. As in "Seen one so another must also be good". Another bar that serves draught Guinness. Because it is so out of the way on a Calle that you dont HAVE to walk down to get somewhere, they only have a small portion of the trade available. Do pop in and give them some custom if you're in that part of town. Price range: Good value for money. Atmosphere: Good conversations but the place only livens up later. Theme: An odd mixture of nautical and Irish. Opening times: From 7pm daily. Disabled notes: Not really suitable for wheelchairs.

    Casual

Bar Barbados : Prop. - Mark: Bar Barbados, tropical theme (Calle Fray Junipero)
British Sports Bar. Sports, especially motor racing, on TV at the Barbados (If you like that sort of thing). The observant of you will have noticed the Formula 1 posters and the model cars as part of the decor as Mark is devoted to motor racing. Free nibbles on the bar. Draught Guinness, Carling Black Label served here. Price range: Good value for money. Atmosphere: Cosy. Theme: Motor racing theme throughout. Opening hours: From around lunchtime util about 11:00 pm. Disabled notes: Level access but toilets access is too narrow for a wheelchair.

    Casual

Bar Canterero : Prop. - Scott.: Orange Square al fresco. (Plaza Canterero)
Spanish Ice creamery/Bar. Bar Canterero is situated beneath the Hostal Canterero in Orange Square, or to give it its proper name, Plaza Canterero. The bar itself is clean and new but quite small inside, however, Scott, the bar owner, who is Spanish/English and speaks both languages fluently, has comfortable tables and chairs across the road and actually in the pergola surrounded square which has a large fountain at its centre. The fountain automatically switches itself off at 3pm for Siesta purposes but the bar is open until late evening. A fantastic place for a drink or an ice cream in the sun. Parasols are provided to keep the hottest sun off and over €1000 worth of ice cream varieties are stocked. Price range: Very good value for money. Cheaper than most with 'al fresco' tables. Atmosphere: Being as most tables are outside. Take company with you. However Scott the owner is a great person to talk to if for any reason you are stuck inside the small bar. Theme: Inside clean and bright. No real theme. Outside you are amongst orange blossomed pergolas and in the centre there is a spectacular fountain which shuts itself off at 3pm for siesta reasons. (for people not the fountain !). Opening hours: Closed Mondays and exceedingly bad weather. Disabled notes: Level access. But althought the toilet has been fitted with wheelchair bars etc., it is too small to manouvre a chair around.

    As you please.

Bar Chanquete: Chanquete. (Calle Antonio Ferrandiz Chanquete)
International Tapas Bar. A nice bar that was underused because of its location away from other bars is The Chanquete. Larger than the average bar, it had a pool table and was cool and comfortable. Great tapas were available here and local Spanish workers used to have breakfast (Desayunos) here. I shall miss the last proprieters, Glyn and Trudy, who have returned to the UK. Beers were Amstel and San Miguel. Price range: Not now aplicable (See below) Atmosphere: Was quite good before closure. Theme: Very Spanish / Mediteranean colour scheme. Opening times: BAR PERMINANTLY CLOSED Disabled notes: N/A * NOTE: Bar perminantly CLOSED. From my Nerja sources. This bar is probably NOT going to re open as the whole block has been sold and the new owner does not want a bar as part of his purchase. A shame but there you go! Sorely missed

Bar Cuñaos: The through bar ? (Calle Herrera Oria)
Spanish Tapas Bar. A traditional Spanish tourist bar is Bar Cuñaos, more popularly known as the 'Through bar'. This is because if you enter the bar from Calle Herrera Oria side and walk through you can walk 'THROUGH' and come out on Calle San Francisco ! €1.20 will get you a small beer and a Tapa (free snack) of your choice. The bar is quite large and has 3 tables with parasols outside where they catch the sunshine. Beer is Amstel but, quite honestly, the white wine is not overly good. The red wine is great. If you want a true taste of Spain, visit this bar. Price range: Excellent value for money and includes 'Tapas'. Atmosphere: A great Spanish feel. Theme: Modern Spanish, but quite tasteful. Opening times: Lunchtimes and evenings. Disabled notes: Note - Two steps up to the bar entrance.

    Casual.

Bar El Bosque: The Bosque, sunny terraz (Avenida Castilla Perez)
El Bosque (Sorry for poor pic. quality) - Nerja
    El Bosque (Sorry for poor
    pic. quality)
    by Pauldelabar
    Send Photo to a Friend
British Sports Bar. The Bosque has a large sunny terrace on the front of the bar which has the sun on it from early morning until after lunchtime and is very popular. One observation is that inside, there seems more room behind the bar than there is this side for customers! Multi sports can be watched on TV here - at the same time and a horse racing bet may also be placed. Bar food is also available here. The terrace is a firm favourite and I would advise going early to get a table outside. Price range: Good value for money. Atmosphere: Not a great deal of atmosphere but the sunny terrace makes up for it. Theme: The bar counter dominates inside. No real theme. opening hours: Mid morning until around 1:00pm. Disabled notes: Level access. The picture was part of another of the Acorn so I appologise for the poor quality of the 'blow up' of this part of that picture as this is the only shot I have at present of the bar El Bosque.

Bar Martin: Bar Martin. Spanish cafe bar. (Calle San Miguel)
Spanish Cafe/Bar. Bar Martin is a Spanish bar that opens early for breakfasts of a Spanish style and English. The Spanish word for breakfasts is Desayunos and traditional machine coffee is served here. The bar is clean, functional and well sited being on the main road down through the town. Beer here is San Miguel Price range: Cheaper than the norm, even with a prices increase. Atmosphere: You need your own company as this is a purely functional establishment. Theme: No real theme. Modern stainless steel bar counter. Modern Spanish. Opening times: Opens early daily for breakfasts. The bar is not open late and closes in the early evening. Disabled notes: Level access.
