Sláinte: Bar run by Scottish. (Avda Mediterraneo)
Irish or Scottish Bar?. This extra large bar has recently opened on Avenida Mediterraneo. This used to be the old Miramar which was closed for years. It has had a total internal refit and is definately destined to do well. Although this bar has an Irish sounding name, it is run by a couple from Glasgow! As 'Slainte' is cheers in Irish and Scottish, 'both' would seem to be the best to say. Price range: A little above the average. Atmosphere: So big that you will need to take your own company. Theme: The theme does not seem to be carried through to the interior. Opening times: Lunchtimes and evenings. Disabled notes Level access.

Smart Casual.

Speakeasy: No prohibition at the speakeasy. (Calle Malaga)
British Restaurant/Bar. An unsual theme is the Chicago styled Speakeasy. Photograghs and posters of a by-gone era of many themes such as film stars, boxing and the prohibition era decorate the bar. A larger than most bar, it serves a good sellection of food. Draught beers are John Smiths or San Miguel. A very cosy atmosphere. Tea and Coffee are served and are both quite popular here, in the comfortable surroundings. Price range: Good value for money. Atmosphere: A bit limited on the conversation side unless you know someone who comes in. Theme: Great American prohibition era theme throughout but there's no lack of drinks here. Opening times: Lunchtimes and evenings until fairly late. Disabled notes: A few steps ate the front and a narrow passage to the toilets need to be noted.

    Casual.

The Acorn: Don't go nuts at the Acorn (Avda Castilla Perez)
British Sports Bar. This is a larger than most Sports bar with several TVs showing various sports activities but with a football bias. There is also a pool table. Plenty of windows giving a light and airy feel. The Acorn can get busy on Saturdays and Sundays afternoons. Guinness and other English beers can be purchased here. Price range: Good value for money. Atmosphere: Very sport oriented. So is the conversation. Theme: Sporty with England flags adorning the walls and ceilings. Opening times: Around 7pm in the week. From mid day on Sat and Sun. Disabled notes: A set of steep steps up to this bar so not good for wheelchairs.

The Andrea Inn : Prop. - Paul and Carole.: Comforts of home at The Andrea Inn (Calle Jaen)
British Bar. A relatively new bar to open is The Andrea Inn. This used to be a German bar but is now very much a British Bar. Opened on New Years day 2005, I was one of the first to go in. The owner being from Cornwall, I suggested Cornish pasties on the menu might be a good money spinner. He took me at my word and his pastries are now known all over Nerja. Not bad considering that his trade is a construction worker ! Beer is San Miguel on draught or in bottle and wines are the very tasty Liria Red (Tinto), White (Blanco) or Rose (Rosado). Guinness is available in 'widgit' cans. A true cullinery story: Pasties can travel well. A couple were in the Chapel bar, near to the Andrea and Mrs. X thought that her husband (Mr. X) had drank enough. He disagreed so she took his beer from him. He had just bought a pastie from the Andrea and it was wrapped in foil. Mr. X tried to regain his beer when his better half decided to hit him with the pastie. Still this did not work so she threw it at him. He ducked. Not being stupid, he took the oportunity and left, and we looked for where the pastie had got to. It had bounced off the front window and then disapeared. We eventually found it in someones jacket pocket where the rickochet had delivered it. So who says pasties can't travel. The pastie was unbroken and still edible as Mr. X found out when it was presented for his tea ! If anyone doubts this story, please ask at The Andrea Inn. Price range: Good value for money. Atmosphere: A favourite with British ex Pats. Good chat and a cosy feel. Theme: Cosy British pub. Definately worth a visit or two. Opening times: From mid day until late. Disabled notes: Level access but toilets are too narrow for a wheelchair. This bar has changed hands recently, but fear not. I know who the new proprieter is ---ME !

Very casual. (BTW. Pasty throwing is optional).

The Chapel Bar : Prop. - Lisa.: The Chapel. (Calle Jaen)
British Bar. A small but bright and airy little bar. This bar has changed out of all recognition to what it used to look like. Whether that is for the better or worse, you will have to make your own mind up. How many of you remember the days of the beamed ceiling and the spiral stairs by the entrance door and the fridge in the front window? Price range: Unknown at this time. Atmosphere: Seems to have lost a lot of character. Theme: Wine bar style. Opening times: Closed all day on SATURDAYS. Disabled notes: Level access and wheelchair friendly toilets.

British Restaurant/Bar. The Coach and horses is very much a food oriented pub. Tastefully decorated if a bit dated now, there are plenty of tables and bar space with tall bar chairs. Table service is provided to all tables and you are looked after very well. Guinness is on draught here. Sky TV music forms the entertainment. Traditional English food is served and tables are provided outside for al fresco dining. Price range: Quite expensive for drinks and food. Atmosphere: Quite good for a busy 'touristy' bar. Theme: Very 'Olde Worlde' which looks very nice. Looks like an old coaching inn. Opening times: From about 10am until 3pm and 7pm till about mid night. Closed all day Saturday. Disabled notes: Pretty level access but toilets are small.

    Casual.

The Fillmore: Live music at the Fillmore. (Plaza Ermita)
British Music Tapas/Bar. The Fillmore is a hard to find bar, tucked away in Plaza Ermita. It is well known for live music at least once a week on the terrace at the side. The bar is an unusual shape owing to a covered stair well making it a square 'U' shape. It is only a small bar but full of character. Draught Guinness is available here along with the ubiquitous San Miguel. Tapas are available. This bar is currently CLOSED. Hopefully it will find a buyer and open again soon. Price range: Good value for money. Atmosphere: Great when there is live music playing. Theme: Music pictures and instruments adorn this bar as a theme. Opening times: Bar currently CLOSED. Disabled notes: Level access but a small bar for wheelchairs.

    Very Casual.

The Hideaway: Robin Hood to Hideaway (Plaza Marina)
This is an old pic of the bar as the Robin Hood. - Nerja
This is an old pic of the bar
    as the Robin Hood.

British Bar The latest bar to reopen is the Hideaway which used to be called the Robin Hood after closure and then just run by the Spanish owner whilst waiting for a buyer. It has changed its name which is well suited to this bar as it is hidden away to some decree in Plaza Marina. They do have to pay the town hall to change name, however. At first glance, this is a narrow bar but it opens out into a large room towards the back where the dining and function room used to be. There is a small terrace at the front of the bar for the warm weather with tables and chairs. As this is in effect a square that has a small childrens park in the middle, not much traffic interferes with the pavement terraces. So no fear of busy street noise. I am informed that this place now specialises in English food. Roast dinners and traditional breakfasts here. Price range: A little above the average. Atmosphere: Unknown. Theme: Olde Worlde. Opening times: Disabled notes: Too narrow for wheelchairs.

    Casual.

Irish Bar. A 3-4 piece band plays twice weekly in an up tempo country theme. Usually on a Monday and Thursday night. The quality is good and is well worth a visit. It does get packed so get there early if you want a table. Also, I've never before seen so many clocks on the wall in a bar. This bar is very close to the Indian restaurant 'A taste of India', so you could combine a meal with a visit here both being on the same street, Calle Carabeo. Draught Guinness again is on tap at the. Irish Harp Good live music on Mondays and Thursdays. Price range: Good value for money and the music is free. Atmosphere: Very cosy. Theme: A comfortable Irish theme with great decor items. Opening times: From 7:00 pm until late. Disabled notes: There are some steps up to the bar from the street to be aware of for the mobility impaired.
