Central church in Frigiliana

Drive due north of Nerja for about 10 minutes -- into the mountains -- for a tour of the beautiful hillside town of Frigiliana. This is more what one might remember of the Mediterranean: whitewashed buildings, narrow walking streets, quaint stores selling locally-made crafts and delicious restaurants and wine bars. After discovering this town, we spent several afternoons here, enjoying "what used to be" of the Costa Del Sol.

Found in 'Nerja Essential' mag.

Just about all of us have seen an automatic car wash before.
However this picture is unique in my experience of a DOG wash at a local Nerja garage.
'Pet Clin' is the logo on the side of this device.

I can understand the usefulness of this device but to actually SEE one. I had to look twice!

Larios aquaduct at Maro

This old aquaduct is to be found at Maro which is only a few miles from Nerja.

Alsina Graells coaches will take you there from Nerja's 'bus dock' (As the Spanish call it).

Strictly called the Larios aquaduct. It's amazing that a structure used for conveying WATER has the name of a Spanish GIN !

Don't miss the Market

Sunday Market.
3 more images

An open air market is held every Tuesday in the Prol. Antonio Million streets area and is worthy of a look for presents to take home or just for a wander round. Clothes, Fresh Fruit & Vegetables, Garden items, Furniture. It's all here at reasonable prices.

Also, on Sunday mornings, the Spanish equivalent to a car boot sale takes place. From the unconventional, useful to downright rubbish is on sale but also should not be missed. Yo may see that unmissable bargain!

Do not be misled by the lack of people at the markets in the pictures. This is early morning. They get packed later on !

Location:
To get there, head down past Big Al's and first right. That is Calle Antonio Million. Prolong Antonio Million (which basicly means an extra street that they have decided to call the same name ! ) is further over. You will know that you are on the right street when you see a Delicatessen Bar called Pie in the Sky.

Note:
There are moves afoot to relocate both markets to an area near to El Zoco (called Almijara II) which is uphill at the North East side of town in the near future. This is an excessively long walk from the coach stop, and the BLUE Urbano bus is the best recommended way of getting there. The Sunday market has moved first. The Tuesday one may move later on. There is still a lot of negotiation going on as the stallholders don't want to move there.

STOP PRESS
The Sunday market (car boot), Moved to the new location on June 12. No news on the Tuesday market YET. Watch this space!

Other markets that you may wish visit:

Sunday - Fuengirola, Torre del Mar, Vélez Málaga
Monday - Torrox Costa
Tuesday - Salobreña
Wednesday - Algarrobo Costa, Rincon de la Victoria
Thursday - Frigiliana, Torre del Mar, Vélez Málaga
Friday - Almuñecar, Benalmadena, La Herradura, Salobreña
Saturday - Competa, Torrox Costa

Maro Cliffs

Maro, is a 10 min. drive away along the N-340 main road. A small village in the west of the province of Malaga, near the border with the province of Granada, it is a quiet, unspoilt place with a nice beach.

There are a few cafes with a terraces that area very good spot from which to watch the sunset. There are also a couple of restaurants for larger meals.

Maro is close to the caves of Nerja and holds a street market every Saturday.

El Acueducto del Aguila

Still in perfect condition, El Acueducto del Aguila (The Eagle Aquaduct) is located on the Barranco de la Coladilla or the Cazadores de Maro (Nerja) cliff, close to the N-340 main road.
Some maintain that this is the most beautiful aquaduct constructed during the XIX century.

Built built to carry water to the mills of the old San Joaquín sugar factory in Maro,
the aquaduct comprises four levels of superimposed brick arcades with 38 arches and also features entrance templets on the top storey and a central templet with an inscription reading "Pura y Limpia Concepción" (Pure and Clean Conception").

You can enjoy pleasant walks with stunning views from the Tower of Maro.

la vinuela

North-west of Nerja lies the town Velez-Malaga. North of there is a very green area with lovely typical Spanish villages around it. In spring the green fields are filled with yellow flowers.
All this green is caused by a storage lake. A lovely place to drive through and have a picknick.

Just three kilometres east of Nerja are the Cuevas de Nerja, or Nerja caves, beside the unspoilt village of Maro.

It contains the worlds larges stalagmite pillar and also wall paintings that date from the Palaeolithic and post-Palaeolithic periods

Open daily from 1030 - 1400 and 1600 - 1800 (1600 - 2000 in July and August).
