You have to go scuba diving if you visit any warm country ~ Id previously been diving and lucky enough to have be trained as a child by my step/dad as he was an instructor~ But going with Barny was such great fun Not only is he down to earth but he will give you and your friends and family what it is you want from your experience~~ being it a daytime dive or nightime for more experienced divers you really cant miss out on this great adventure it is after all Another world under there me and Gee did a few dives one of which was on the beach of Playa de Cantarrijan this was a beautiful nudist beach not for all ~~ Smiles ~~A lovely beach with some excellent bars and taverns. A lively setting with a variety of music. It is reached via a very precarious cliff track (wide enough for one car) desending at a very steep rate - not for the nervous. I didnt like it at all but it was worth it ~~ when you got down to the beach ~~ It is used as the base for one of Scubanerja's dive sites - a very beautiful setting The marine life includes octopus, conger, moray, lobster, grouper, weaverfish moonfish, dasmil, wrasse, scorpion fish, salifish, swordfish, dolphin, silverfish, nudibranchis, flowers, faunas and corals. | | | | Lighthouses in Torre Del Mar (not far from Nerja) | Tip Rating: | | | | |
From Smile Nerja Magazine Issue 14 - www.smilenerja.com We all know the reason coastlines around the world are dotted with lighthouses, to guide ships around potentially treacherous stretches of water. So then, why is this lighthouse in Torre (Pic A) tucked away in an alley amongst a bunch of apartments? Smile:) Investigates... The give away should be in the title, "Los Faros De Torre Del Mar," for those of you who speak Spanish and "The Lighthouses of Torre..." (note: it’s plural) for those who don’t. Picture A is Torre’s original lighthouse built in 1930 at a time when it was on the frontline to the coast. At 9.6 metres high it is clearly dwarfed by its neighbouring residential buildings. 30-odd years later and the 60’s building boom arrived along with the the lighthouse’s new neighbours and so in order to continue the good work, the second lighthouse (B) was built closer to the coast, in the same style and with the use of the lighting equipment from its older brother. However due to its lack of height and beam distance its replacement was detailed in a maritime improvement plan during the 70’s. In 1976 the new, higher & brighter lighthouse (C and front cover pic) was commissioned and built to a height of 24.7 metres and currently stands overshadowing its older brothers (we assume them to be brothers from the Spanish translation of Los Faros being masculine and, erm, for other reasons we won’t go into for the sake of our younger readers!) From The Front Cover of Smile Nerja:) Issue 7 Some of you may have heard of the Spanish television series from the early 80’s, ‘Verano Azul’ or ‘Blue Summer’. It was a series about seven kids who spent the summer in Nerja getting into various adventures. The show covered a number of previously untouched subjects such as relationships and death. It won several awards including Best Actor, by Antonio Ferrandis and Best National Series. What you may not be aware of are the number of references to the programme that there are to be found around Nerja. There is the most obvious - the Verano Azul Park, which houses the famous boat from the series ‘La Dorada 1’. In the park you will also find a number of plaques depicting the characters of the youngsters who appeared in the series, including that of ‘Tito’ played by Miguel Joven who was the only one to actually come from Nerja. There are many streetnames, including ‘Antonio Ferrandis’ which is also known as ‘Chanquete’, these being the character and the actor’s names of the father-figure in the series. If you’ve ever wondered, whilst walking along the Paseo at Burriana beach, what the green metal chair depicts; this is a replica of the chair used by the Verano Azul director, Antonio Mercero. There were also a number of businesses that sprang up at the time, using the name of ‘Verano Azul’ to enhance their business and evidence of these can still be seen around town today on the sides of their blue buses and on apartment buildings. Why not go ‘Verano Azul Spotting’ yourselves and let us know if you find any more references around town! Address: All Around Nerja!Phone: 664 016 293Website: www.smilenerja.com

 | | | | CUEVA DE NERJA - NERJA CAVES | Tip Rating: | | | | |
Wednesday, March 21, 2001 While in Nerja, a must see activity is to visit the CUEVA DE NERJA the Nerja Caves, a 3000 years old cave with colossal Stalactites. Hans and I thoroughly enjoyed going through the caves. At the time the entrance fee was 800 pesetas or $7.20 CDN. Among its most outstanding features is a column of 32 metres in height made up of one billion drops of water. Discovered in 1959, when five youngsters from Nerja and Maro stumbled upon it while on a nocturnal adventure hunting bats, Nerja Cave is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Europe. There is a total of 4,283 metres of caves, of which only a third are open to the public. For the moment, you are only allowed to enter the areas called Galerias Bajas (the lower galleries), known for their high vaulted ceilings and beautiful formations of stalactites and stalagmites One of the most spectacular caverns is the one known as the Cataclysm, an area on which Palaeolithic cave paintings (symbols and animals) can be seen. As it was so dark inside the caves, it was next to impossible to take any decent photos, so the accompanying picture is from a post-card. Leave a Comment

Nerja is fortunate enough to have 8 beaches. They are all named and I will list them with the most Westerly first. (Playa = beach):- Playa El Playazo Playa Torecilla (Opposite the Hotel Monica) Playa El Salon (West of the Balcon de Europa) Playa Calahonda (East of the Balcon de Europa) Playa El Chorrillo Playa Carabeo Playa Carabeillo Playa Burriana (To the East of Nerja) All beaches are of the same composition. Nerja has what can only be described as 'stony sand'. There are plenty of beach bars dotted about serving drinks and food at very reasonable prices. Some bars have beach barbecues available all day.
