On your arrival in Nerja along the N340 Coast Road you are greeted with "El Rapto De Europa", a monument erected by the town on 26th January 1986 to celebrate Spain’s entry into the European Union.

Created by the Andalusian artist, Aurelio Teno Teno. It, apparently, represents the god Zeus in the form of a bull sent to abduct Europe, but who is fought off by a woman, representing Spain and therefore saving Europe and the free world as we know it!

Some of you may have heard of the Spanish television series from the early 80’s, ‘Verano Azul’ or ‘Blue Summer’. It was a series about seven kids who spent the summer in Nerja getting into various adventures. The show covered a number of previously untouched subjects such as relationships and death. It won several awards including Best Actor, by Antonio Ferrandis and Best National Series. What you may not be aware of are the number of references to the programme that there are to be found around Nerja.

There is the most obvious - the Verano Azul Park, which houses the famous boat from the series ‘La Dorada 1’. In the park you will also find a number of plaques depicting the characters of the youngsters who appeared in the series, including that of ‘Tito’ played by Miguel Joven who was the only one to actually come from Nerja.

There are many streetnames, including ‘Antonio Ferrandis’ which is also known as ‘Chanquete’, these being the character and the actor’s names of the father-figure in the series. If you’ve ever wondered, whilst walking along the Paseo at Burriana beach, what the green metal chair depicts; this is a replica of the chair used by the Verano Azul director, Antonio Mercero.

There were also a number of businesses that sprang up at the time, using the name of ‘Verano Azul’ to enhance their business and evidence of these can still be seen around town today on the sides of their blue buses and on apartment buildings.

Why not go ‘Verano Azul Spotting’ yourselves and let us know if you find any more references around town!

The Balcón de Europa (Balcony of Europe) was originaly the site of a Moorish Castle, today it has been turned into a promenade with great views along the coast and into the Mediterranean sea. Quiet coves surround it and a few cafes serve refreshments.

The Balcon de Europa is a popular meeting place from morning til midnight and a good place to meet friends for a coffee or a bit of people watching.
Centrally located in Nerja it is close to many restaurants, shops, the Tourist Office, Post Office. THere are also several hotels in all classes, and self catering accommodation within easy walking distance.
There are good views from the Balcon over Calahonda Beach to the east and, to the west, the little cove belonging to The Balcon de Europa Hotel - a great place to catch the sunset.

The history of the town from the neolithic period to the mid 20th Century is an extraordinary cyclical tale of poverty and prosperity, war and peace, health and disease.

The 19th century brought the greatest combination of the best of all these making Nerja the centre of trade for the produce gown and harvested by the people . As the 20th century began so did another downward spiral - cholera, typhoid, drought, and Phylloxera, industrial unrest and civil war resulted in mass emigration and the decline of the town.
Through the discovery in 1958 of the caves the town was reborn and became famous as a tourist destination.

If you are staying in Nerja and are missing logging onto VT, then take yourself down to Cafe MedWeb.

Here for very reasonable rates you can log on and catch up with you E mails, search for cheap flights or log on to VT. You can print things in Black or in Colour. Windows XP and a Broadband connection ensures an excellent service.

Drinks both alcoholic or none are available. For those who do, you can smoke. They also do hot and cold snacks and they speak English. Also the place is not clinical as in a library, you may take a friens to show off your site or just for company and talking is not discouraged.

    Torecilla beach.

Nerja is fortunate enough to have 8 beaches. They are all named and I will list them with the most Westerly first. (Playa = beach):-
    Playa El Playazo
Playa Torecilla (Opposite the Hotel Monica)
Playa El Salon (West of the Balcon de Europa)
Playa Calahonda (East of the Balcon de Europa)
    Playa El Chorrillo
    Playa Carabeo
    Playa Carabeillo
Playa Burriana (To the East of Nerja)

All beaches are of the same composition. Nerja has what can only be described as 'stony sand'.

There are plenty of beach bars dotted about serving drinks and food at very reasonable prices. Some bars have beach barbecues available all day.

Last year, (2004), Nerja Equine Sanctuary opened to provide a home for mistreated and homeless horses, donkeys and mules. The sanctuary, SEPE NERJA, is a local autonomous branch of S.E.P.E. (Sociedad Española para la Protección de los Equinos) a national Spanish society (charity) whose aims are the rescue and protection of all equines.

Last year they had 5 donkeys and 2 elderly mules, plus assorted cats and dogs that were left with them. These they do their best to find homes for.

if you like animals, this is a good place to visit and give some financial aid to as the animals are well cared for and all the staff are all volunteers.

They are open to the public from 10am to 2pm seven days a week. There is a kids club on Saturday, 10-2.

Harriet, one of the staff, has her own website and diary at www.harrietsdonkeys.org

Most of our visits to Nerja were in February or March and on several occasions we were there for the Fiesta held usually on the weekend before Ash Wednesday.

It was always great fun and.although obviously managed and overseen somehow, it had an air of spontaneous organised chaos.
It was lovely to walk around in the carnival atmosphere that gripped the town centre in absolute safety; small children played freely and we never saw any drunkeness or anti-social behaviour.

We have not seen been there at the right time for several years so I only have reports that it has become a much bigger, more orgainsed event in recent years.

Nerjas coastline consists of a straight length of beach and then goes into small coves, parts of it are rocky, but I spent hours sitting on these rocks, waves crashing up, mountains in the distance, sun on my back - wow!!
