Bar El Ronquillo (Triana): Traditional cuisine

by Expat-expert

The gastrnomic richness of Andalucía is known throughout the world, from its cured ham to its unequalled olive oil. Yet, going out for tapas is an Andalusian gastronomic acclaim. A trait custom of this land which consists of going out to eat tapas at bars, especially in the afternoon. A tapa is a small dish of food which is usually accompanied with a beer or a glass of wine. Gamba Alajillo - this is a saucy, galic marinated shrimp dish that this restaurant is known for. T

Hotel Balcon de Cómpeta: (Cómpeta) Difficult to beat the view!

by Bwana_Brown

Finishing up our three nights in Estepona, we continued eastward early in the morning to drop Sue's sister off at Malaga airport for her return flight to England after spending nine nights with us. We then continued onward up the coast, diverting inland a short distance to the 'white village' of Cómpeta before looking for new lodgings - we had nothing reserved for the next eight nights. After working our way up through the convoluted streets of Cómpeta we just happened to find an open parking space almost in front of the Hotel Balcon de Cómpeta. From there, we took a short stroll into the maze of streets but quickly ended up spending an hour in an internet cafe we chanced upon, catching up on our messages. By 12:30 PM, after making our way past a few closed restaurants, we ended up back at the hotel and decided to give their outdoor rear patio seating a go. It turned out that they were...

Trader Vic's Mai-Tai Lounge: (Estepona) This was a great meal

by Bwana_Brown

By the time we had finished touring Ronda and then returned to Estepona, our meagre lunchtime rations had left us quite famished. There was not much happening in Estepona for restaurants on the evening of Christmas Day, but our B&B hosts mentioned that the nearby restaurants of Laguna Village on the Mediterranean shore might offer us some hope. The Spanish tend to eat late anyway and we were actually a bit early in turning up at around 7 PM as we searched for any place at all that was open in the Village - it seemed that Trader Vic's was the only choice, so in we went. It was not busy at all, in fact we ended up being their only customers, so service was quick! The prices did not look outrageous and I was in the mood for some nice international-flavoured food, so this place was suiting me to a tee. The Malayan Prawn Skewers with coconut lime dipping sauce (14 Euros) was my choice, while...

Bar Pizzeria Paolino: (San José) An interesting evening meal

by Bwana_Brown

After leaving Gibraltar, we were successful finding accoms in Torremolinos for one night (and back to our Chinese restaurant) followed by a day trip to Alhambra de la Granada with two more nights in Nerja, where we revisited both our previous accoms and El Bosque restaurant. With only one night left in Andalucia, we decided to spend it half-way up the coast to our Alicante departure airport, in the amazing nature reserve area of El Cabo de Gata and its main town of San José. Due to our 'tourist' time schedule, we had not had much luck having late meals in Spain, because they tend to get started much later than we would like after a busy day taking in the sights. However, on this Saturday evening, we decided to give it our best shot by killing time in our room until about 9 PM when things are supposed to come alive - we thought. First, we took a walk around the entire downtown area to see...

Lord Nelson: (Gibraltar) Our only 'meal' there

by Bwana_Brown

After leaving Vejer de la Frontera, we returned to Tarifa for one more night on the Atlantic coast before booting it back up the Mediterranean coast. It would be New Year's Eve and we had nowhere to stay - so were headed for our first hostal in Torremolinos, hoping they would have a spot for us! Despite this, since we were driving past Gibraltar, we just had to stop for a quick look at this famous rock for ourselves. It was already just past noon by the time we had driven up from Tarifa, found parking for our rental car in La Linea de la Conception and then dealt with Customs & Immigration as we walked across the Spanish border into the heart of Gibraltar. It was great to emerge from the Landport Tunnel at such a lovely location as Casemates Square with a fantastic looking British pub awaiting! The service was quite good and it definintely has 'location', so we were quite pleased to...

La Morita - Pizzas y Pastas: (Vejar de la Frontera) Smoky, but excellent food

by Bwana_Brown

We had an enjoyable day working our way up the Atlantic coast from Tarifa to nearby Vejer de la Frontara and finally arrived back at Vejer from Cabo de Trafalgar at about 5:30 PM. After spending some time sipping sherry on our hostal balcony as we looked out over the deep valley from the town's hilltop location, we followed that with a relatively long session on Hostal la Janda's internet computer in the lobby as we exchanged messages with home. By 8 PM we were getting hungry, so made our way on foot a short distance through the narrow, sloping and winding streets of the old town as we sought out a restaurant. We were still early for an evening meal in Spain and most places seemed empty. However, after we saw an English couple enter and then emerge from a nice looking Italian-themed restaurant, we asked them what they thought of it. Too smoky for them they said, but we decided to check...

Café Central: (Tarifa) A long-time local favourite

by Bwana_Brown

After leaving Nerja for the drive to the Atlantic coast, it was just before 5 PM by the time we had settled into our accommodations at Pension Correo and then walked the short distance to Café Central, a very happening-looking spot in downtown Tarifa. We treated ourselves to a drink after our long day of driving and then finding accommodations before we set off on foot to explore Old Tarifa in more detail. Dating from 1894, with either sidewalk or indoor seating available, this popular local restaurant has long been a fun place to hang out in Tarifa. It was quite enjoyable just to watch all the activity by both locals and tourists as the action heated up in the evening with patrons either standing at the bar or finding themselves a table. Their web-site says it is "a Spanish style café, bar and restaurant all in one, where you can eat, drink and be merry from the morning right through...

Bar el Bosque: (Nerja) We came back a second time!

by Bwana_Brown

After finishing our 'white village' tour, we ended up spending the night in the nearby seaside town of Nerja. That evening, it took a bit of looking but we finally stumbled upon El Bosque, a great little British-themed sports pub not far from our hostal. It did not look too attractive in winter with a seasonal heated canopy covering its sidewalk patio. We walked through into the dark bar area itself, picking a corner spot where we could keep an eye on the bar while we listened to the nearby patrons talking away with strong British accents. Returning five nights later after our Atlantic coast adventures, the same couple was in the same spot. We ended up having great conversations with them and again the following evening. The guy turned out to be a Yorkshireman who had been a coal miner all his life and then retired several years ago at age 49, now spending his winters in Nerja as part of...

Hotel Dunas Puerto: (Cadiz area) Happy Birthday!

by Bwana_Brown

We were late leaving Sevilla as we made our next drive to the Cadiz area, staying across the bay in the smaller waterfront city of El Puerto de Santa Maria. Our previous evening's meal in Sevilla had been a bit of a rushed tapas bar affair and our following night was to be spent in a bed & breakfast on the outskirts of Estepona, so we decided to splurge for once and have a nice sit-down meal in a proper restaurant. Sue's sister was having her birthday the next day so we decided this would be her 'birthday party' meal!Earlier, we had enquired with Hotel Dunas Puerto staff about the restaurant arrangements and all went well with our viewing of the menu at 8 PM and then sitting down in their nice dining room area at 8:30 (mostly empty at that time of the evening). We were eventually joined by two other groups of people, but it was a quiet and relaxing meal as we took our time with the...

Bar La Tertulia: (Ronda) Christmas Day tapas

by Bwana_Brown

After leaving the Cadiz area, our next stop was for three nights in Estepona on the Mediterranean coast. While there, on Christmas Day we made a day-trip to the mountains to see Ronda. It was there, shortly after noon, we all realized that we were getting hungry as our Estepona breakfast wore off, so we back-tracked from Old Ronda and crossed the New Bridge to see what we could find in the way of open restaurants on Christmas Day in the 'newer' part of Ronda. We were not having much luck with our typical 'no planning ahead' strategy, but soon found the Bar La Tertulia up a small side-street not far from the bridge. When we entered the place was almost empty of customers, but at least it was open for business. We found ourselves a table and some tall stools in one of their little booths along a wall and had a look at the menu. They only had about seven different tapas dishes listed, so we...
