Cathedral and Giralda, Sevilla
But why not? Plaza Virgen de los Reyes is the square that is without a doubt, the tourist center of Sevilla. It's situated in the shadow of the Giralda tower and next to the Cathedral and the Alcazar. Yes, it's a tourist trap, but what a beautiful place!
I don´t like the Cathedral.. I´m one of the strange people with this opinion. I would like to see what it looked like as a mosque.. but when you´re in Sevilla you should see it, just for its enormity. Right now they are cleaning the outside, so some of it is gleamingly clean, and other parts sooty grey.
I have climbed to the top of Giralda once, and enjoyed the view from the top, but not the long walk up..
I think the interior is pretty anticlimactic..again, I´m a strange person.
The tomb to Cristobal Colombe is garrish, but again you should see it to say you did... and according to recent DNA testing, at least some of the bones in there are really his.
I have nightmares about being locked in this place at night..
You can see where a good deal of the gold and silver from the New World went... into the alters of this church. Yes, again impressively garrish.
Unique Suggestions: Don´t take any sprigs of Rosemary thrust into your hands outside of this, or any other church. Its a big scam, they will try to read your palm and then get money out of you... bad!
Giralda is an attraction for itself, in the marvel of the cathedral.
It's easy to climb, because it has inclines instead of stairs, and they seem not too steep.
But they are... long. Now imagine the sorrow I felt when, in my way down, we met a Japanese senior couple with him telling her, while resting a bit on his walking stick: "We are almost there". They were brave, indeed, already in stage 9, but I had no guts to tell them that they are... 36 inclines.
Next time I'll check out if they are already in the top or still in their way!
Have you ever experienced the "here we sell this religious place for cash" feeling? In the Cathedral of Sevilla you will. The place - even with the grandeous architecture is quite spoiled by the trampling and noisy tourists and souvenir shops inside.
Unique Suggestions: The tower - however - functions as an excellent view point over the city. The view on Sevilla's oldtown will give you a hint why you were always lost in those crooked streets.
I was surprised to find that this Cathedral considers itself so important that Tourists will be prepared to pay €7 to look at the interior.
We decided that its glory could be seen from the outside for nothing. Shame that these places are limiting the numbers of visitors in this way.
Fun Alternatives: Many many wonderful Churches and Cathedrals all over Spain.
In the area around the Cathederal,Giralda, etc etc, although these are must see sights, remember everything is much more expensive here!!
