Bird Watching Pedra de Fuente

by Glyt

There is a lake called Pedra de Fuente on the way to Campillos. Thousands of Flamingos are residents there until late June when the lake is dried and leave for their trip to Africa. There is a information building that rents binoculars and has many info regarding the lake and the birds. A nice time to spend the evening and enjoy the sun falling in the lake.

Granada

Granada, many say the Jewel of AndaluciaI remember Granda for its green image, definitly in the Alhambra, where the ponds and pools exist without electricity, generated by a labyrinth of underground channels retracting the water from the Sierra Nevada, which is a stunning backdrop of the City of Granada. the City is declared ..Heritage of Humanitywhen Cordoba and Sevilla fell to the Spanish Queen Isabel, the Moors withdrawl to Granada, taking their Architecture to a last new height, building the Alhambra. if you like to know more, visit my Granada page...

Cordoba, my favorite Andalucia City, we all have favorites don't we.Cordoba was the first Capital of Al-Andaluz or Arab Caliphat, a melting pot of three cultures, Muslims, Christians and Jews, for more then 1000years and all is still visible in the jewish quarters of Cordoba and the Mosque- Mezquita! if you like have a look at my Cordoba page.

The glorious Alhambra Palace

by aaaarrgh

On the hilltop above Granada is the wonderful Alhambra, a mixture of castle, palace and gardens. And behind it are the mountain tops of the Sierra Nevada. Tourists come from all over the world in large numbers to see this place. So much so that the ticket numbers each day are strictly limited. Make sure you buy in advance, on the website or at a BBVA Bank. Here you can spend a whole day (I spent five hours). The gardens are filled with fountains, ponds and streams, fruit trees and flowers. The Alcazar Castle gives you panoramic views over the area. The most important attraction are the Nazrid Palaces, home of the Moorish Kings. A maze of heavily decorated throne rooms and courtyards. And all for the modest sum of 10 euros.

Malaga - not just and airport

by aaaarrgh

Many people will get no closer to the city of Malaga than the 'Arrivals' hall at the busy airport. But Malaga has a very pleasant old city centre which is well worth a day of anyone's time. I can imagine that the new Picasso Museum has increased the number of visitors. The small, medieval city centre has plenty of narrow, cobbled streets - beautifully paved with stone of different ages and colours. And Roman/Phoenician remains. And an impressive Bull Ring. And a gigantic Cathedral squashed between the old houses. On the hill above the city centre is the Alcazabar Palace and Gibralfaro Fortress, with splendid views of the area. The Palace houses an archaological museum with an interesting history of industry in Malaga, if you can understand the Spanish.

Seville - Andalucia's capital

by aaaarrgh

Well, Seville is certainly the biggest city in Andalucia, with sprawling suburbs stretching to the horizon. It has a very pretty city centre, centred around its massive cathedral. The best thing to do, in my view, is to climb up the cathedral's famous tower, La Giralda. You can get spectacular views across Seville's roof tops, in every direction. Plaza de Espana is also a pretty landmark, a sweeping crescent of impressive buildings and lakes a short walk to the east.I remember when I visited that the tranquil gardens around the Cathedral were filled with painters, with oil paints and easels. There is also a big Fine Arts School in Seville which a friend and I sneaked into to watch the students at work :-)Good rail and bus connections from Seville - we took day trips by rail to Cadiz in the south and Cordoba to the east.

Granada - Spain's Arab city

by aaaarrgh

Located on the edge of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Granada is a spectacular mixture of cultures. The main attraction is the incredible Alhambra with its Moorish palaces, castle and colourful gardens. The city was one of the last bastions of the Arab Moors and there is still plenty of North African influence. On the opposite hill to the Alhambra is a maze of tiny white streets, the Albaicin, which hassome nice bars, squares and exotic shops. And behind that again is the cave hill of Sacramonte, where people still live in holes in the ground!!Isabel and Ferdinand, the catholic monarchs, stamped their mark on the city. The Royal Chapel, next to the cathedral, is splendidly decorated and worth a visit.See also my Granada Page.

Picasso, Andalucia's most famous artist

by aaaarrgh

Now is the time to visit the city of Malaga, which in 2003 opened a new Picasso Museum. Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born in Malaga in 1881. The airport at Malaga is named after him!Mueo Picasso Malaga is in the heart of the pretty, old city centre. It is housed in a beautiful, ancient courtyard building with a distinctive square tower. The collection of paintings and drawings cover the whole of Picasso's long life, from his earliest portraits as a teenager, to his brash, crude canvases when he was 92.Open Tues to Sunday, generally 10am to 8pm. Admission 6 euros for the permanent collection, 8 euros for permanent and temporary displays.

Buy cookies from the cloistered nuns

by jo104

This was the highlight for me in Ronda buying homemade sweets & cookies from a nun in hiding. At the side entrance of the convent of La Merced there is a small room in which homemade sweets & preserves made by the nuns are displayed in a cabinet. You ring a bell & are blessed by a cloistered Carmelite nun, then place your order & place the money for your purchases in a revolving cupboard. A while later presto your goodies are delivered to you in the revolving shelf with your change although you never see the nun. The Carmelite nuns are of a cloistered order who are devoted to prayer, penance & perpetual abstinence.
