Cordoba - Andalucia

by Beach_dog

Cordoba, another of Andalucia´s special cities steeped with history. Founded by the Romans it later became one of the capitals of Muslim Spain. There is much to see here, the Real Alcazaba, palace of the catholic kings, statues of some of the great figures of the ancient world who came from Cordoba, including Seneca the Roman Senator and advisor to Emperor Nero. But Cordoba´s greatest treasure that really should not be missed is the Mezquita, the Arab Mosque, later converted to a Cathedral, with its hundreds of pillars supporting a vaulted roof. Painted in alternating red and white, it appears like a stone forest.Just outside Cordoba is the ruined Arab city of Medina Azahara also well worth a visit..More information and photos can be found on my Cordoba page.

Abandoned seafront church

by Bwana_Brown

We left Nerja with only one night left in Andalucia, deciding to try for the beautiful and isolated El Cabo de Gata Nature Park located just east of the large city of Almeria - and about half-way to our flight departure point further up the coast in Alicante. After turning off the main Mediterranean coastal highway, we soon came to the small settlement of Almadraba Monteleva which sprang up in the early 1900s when the flat area here beside the sea was developed with pans for production of salt. Today, this industry is suffering economic problems but the salt pans continue to be a major stop-over point for birds migrating between Africa and Europe, including up to about 2,400 pink flamingos.Standing beside the beach road is the now abandoned church of Iglesia de la Almadraba Monteleva also dating from the early 1900s, making quite an impressive sight in the threatening weather over Cabo de...

Get away from the coast now and again!

by Bwana_Brown

After leaving Gibraltar, we spent New Year's Eve back in Torremolinos but we were soon packed up and on the road before 10 AM. The weather forecasts for the coast did not look good so we decided that this would be a great day for a scenic drive into the inland mountain ranges. There was virtually no traffic as we cruised along on the coastal highway to Vélez-Málaga, 55-km to the east. It was there that we branched off to the north on highway A-356/402 as we headed inland to explore the small town of Alhama de Granada - reputed to have views almost as good as those at Ronda! We had only gone a short distance into the river valley before we came to the Viñuela reservoir. This beautiful reservoir became operational in 1989 as a means of controlling the local water flows so they could be used to ensure a reliable supply for both homes and agriculture. As you can see from the photo, rainfall...

Historic Cape Trafalgar

by Bwana_Brown

The weather had been improving all day long, so as soon as we had checked into our hostal in Vejer de la Frontera we quickly left the hilltop for the short drive to Cabo de Trafalgar on the nearby coast. There are actually two capes there, the one with high cliffs in this view and another smaller one at sea-level where a lighthouse is located (2nd & 3rd photos). The name of the cape originates from its long-ago Moorish name of 'Tarf al-Gharb' meaning 'Western Cape', but my interest originated from childhood days of reading accounts of the British Royal Navy and its battles. Probably the most famous one took place off this cape in October, 1805 when 27 British ships-of-the-line took on and defeated Napoleon's combined French/Spanish fleet of 33 ships-of-the line. This turned out to be the most decisive naval battle of the many years of warfare between England and Napoleonic France, but it...

Wild Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea

by Bwana_Brown

With serious rain starting to happen at Nerja, we decided to make the long drive west along the Meditarranean coast to see what was happening with the Atlantic Ocean at Tarifa. When we arrived we were very happy to see the changeable sky over Tarifa (instead of rain)! There was also terrific wave action by both the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea - with the tiny specks in the water (toward the right in this view) being surfers. Isla de las Palomas is a small island just off the coast but is close enough to shore that a narrow vehicle/pedestrian causeway (2nd photo) connects it to Tarifa's harbour area. Because of its prominent position for watching shipping traffic passing through the narrow Strait of Gibraltar, it has long been militarized and is presently off-limits to visitors because it is used as a place to process apprehended illegal immigrants from Africa. During the 1900s it...

Lots of small 'white villages' to explore

by Bwana_Brown

Two days after visiting Ronda, we left Estepona behind as we dropped Sue's sister off at the Malaga airport for her return to England. We were on our own then for the next eight days so decided to continue east a bit for some unplanned exploring.Spain is known for its small and picturesque 'white villages', scattered here and there in the mountainous countryside just inland from the Mediterranean Sea, so we decided we had better go have a look for ourselves. There are a few of these villages just on the outskirts of Nerja - when leaving town just go straight across the main divided A7 coastal highway into the network of narrow, twisting but scenic roads that lace these mountains (they are smooth and in good shape though). It seems that we always do everything backward because we never have any set plans - we made our 'white village' excursion while driving from Torremolinos to Nerja,...

Surprising El Puerto de Santa Maria

by Bwana_Brown

After four days of dealing with the congestion of big cities like Granada and Sevilla, I was looking forward to a more relaxed stay in the Cadiz area. Sure enough, our accommodations choice just across the bay in El Puerto de Santa Maria was just what I needed. In the summer months, El Puerto de Santa Maria is one of the main focal points for pleasure activities involving the Bay of Cadiz, sheltered as it is from the worst effects of the Atlantic Ocean. There are several nice beaches along the coastline and this city of 100,000 has Playa de la Puntilla all to itself almost in the centre of town! We discovered it on our first night in town when we took a little exploratory drive after checking into our hotel - we could actually have walked to it if we had known it was there! Puntilla is quite a broad beach with fine sand, one of several beaches that stretch from the Rota area further into...

Playa de Mónsul - totally awesome!

by Bwana_Brown

Wow, we were really impressed by the rugged beauty of this small part of Spain. From the Andalucia.com website: "Covering 45,663ha in the southeastern corner of Spain, Cabo de Gata-Níjar is Andalucia's largest coastal protected area, a wild and isolated landscape with some of Europe's most original geological features. The related mountain range is Spain's largest volcanic rock formation with sharp peaks and crags in ochre-hues. It falls steeply to the sea creating jagged 100m-high cliffs, which are riven by gullies leading to hidden coves with white sandy beaches, some of the most beautiful in Andalucia. Offshore are numerous tiny rocky islands and, underwater, extensive coral reefs teeming with marine life."Just as the sun was beginning to set, the clouds over the cape began to dissipate - so we jumped in our car and headed for the beaches. By the time we reached Playa de Mónsul, the...

El Cabo de Gata lighthouse

by Bwana_Brown

The road cut into the side of the cliffs leading out to Faro Cabo de Gata made for quite an interesting drive. We had some great views in both directions along the coast as the road wound ever upward from the beach. It is nicely paved with two lanes most of the way but, shortly before reaching the 'faro' (lighthouse), it dwindles to a one lane affair with blind turns where you can't actually see if another vehicle is coming. At these locations there are very narrow lay-bys where vehicles heading back toward Almeria are supposed to give-way (yield). Most people blow their horns at these locations to provide some warning to on-coming traffic. The lighthouse marks the end of the line for the road - you have to retrace your path along the beach and drive through a mountain pass to reach the eastern side of the cape. However, there is a hiking path if you are prepared to continue onward on...

Spend some time in the Sierra Nevada mountains

by Bwana_Brown

After leaving Alhama de Granada, we continued inland for a way before swinging south through the Sierra Nevada mountains as we sought out another accommodations spot on the coast. From Wikipedia: "The Sierra Nevada, meaning 'snowy range' in Spanish, is a mountain range in the region of Andalusia. It contains the highest point of continental Spain, Mulhacén at 3,479 metres (11,414 ft). It is a popular tourist destination, as its high peaks make skiing possible in Europe's most southern ski resort, in an area along the Mediterranean Sea predominantly known for its warm temperatures and abundant sunshine. At its foothills is found the city of Granada and, a little farther, Málaga and Almería." As for me, I was amazed that the mountains in Spain were as high and higher than those in Montana's Glacier National Park - which was quite a spectacular spot itself!Although we had already enjoyed...
