Alhama de Granada - Ronda's competition

by Bwana_Brown

We had been suitably impressed by the world-famous gorge at Ronda eight days earlier, so were anxious to see if the one located at Alhama de Granada was as spectacular as it was reported to be! It was not long after we made it up and over the mountain range that the town came into view (4th photo).Alhama has a long history, so long that even the Romans had built thermal baths in the deep river gorge forming a natural boundary along one side of the city. Following Spain's fall to the Moors in the early 700s, the new rulers were very impressed with the baths and built a few of their own, including improvements to the Roman baths. In addition, a typical Moorish castle was built to defend this strategic location between coastal Malaga and their capital city of Granada, only about 50-km further inland. Alhama de Granada finally fell to Christian forces in 1482 as they continued their...

Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia

by Bwana_Brown

If you are in Vejer de la Frontera, the amazing Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia are less than an hour away by car and are well worth the trip! Located beside the small coastal village of Bolonia (and only a short distance northwest of Tarifa) this coastal settlement dates from about 120 BC and lasted about 600 years before Roman dominance in Spain finally waned. Its reason for being was as a major fish-processing town for the abundance of tuna that lurked in these waters. A brand new Visitor's Centre has been opened (with an entrance fee of only 1.50 Euros per person) and there are lots of partially restored parts of the community to explore on foot in this very scenic spot. It is not open on Mondays and some public holidays but we were able to get our fill of it as we returned from Vejer to Tarifa for our final night on this Atlantic coast of Spain. I have described these ruins in more...

Historic 'white villages' and walls

by Bwana_Brown

By this stage of our trip to Andalusia we had already either seen or been in several 'white' villages during our travels, but this was the first time we actually had accommodations in one of them. This was the scene that greeted us from our hostal balcony as we checked it out - with Vejer's architecture in the foreground and the distant small community of La Muela lit up by sunshine across the valley on its small plateau. If you look closely, in the bottom left corner is the round shell of a now roof-less traditional windmill while on the distant horizon at both left and right are the tall white towers of today's modern wind farms. According to Wikipedia:"The whitewashed villages of Andalucia are impressive historical monuments in themselves, and their people still live according to age-old traditions, inherited from their Iberian, Roman and Moorish forefathers. Many of the villages near...

Check out the 'walking' sand dunes

by Bwana_Brown

We had plans to explore more than just Tarifa on the Atlantic coastline, so we were up and gone after our first night in town, headed further up the coast on the N-340 highway. The weather was still as wild looking as when we had arrived in the area, but we had not gone far before we were intrigued by the first 'walking' sand dunes that I had seen. For a closer look, we turned toward the point of land sticking out from coast, onto a narrow but smooth road leading out into a beautiful pine forest. Part-way through the forest, signs began to appear saying that this was a dead-end road and that only military vehicles could continue.Taking the hint, we turned back to where the sand dunes were just about to over-run our little highway. The dunes along this coast are some of the largest in Europe and are a result of the 'Levante' wind that occurs due to high pressure over the Mediterranean Sea...

Explore Old Tarifa on foot

by Bwana_Brown

It was just after 6 PM by the time we returned from the waterfront to Old Tarifa, spotting our grey station wagon parked in a small square off the maze of twisting streets - exactly where we had left it when we first entered town and had to search out our accommodations on foot. Along its right side is a narrow alley that led a couple of blocks and emerged almost directly at the Pension Correo accommodations we eventually stumbled upon. We spent quite a bit of time wandering around in this old section of Tarifa which acquired its name sometime around the year 710 when the existing settlement was occupied by a Berber named Tarif Ben Malluk. It was never a very large place but a typical Moorish maze of streets sprang up over the next 500-years of Moorish rule and they are still there today. Luckily we had picked up a good tourist map after arriving, which we constantly consulted as we made...

Even in winter the Mediterranean Sea is not bad!

by Bwana_Brown

After our tour of 'white villages' in the mountains, we randomly picked the coastal city of Nerja as a place to spend the night, since it happened to be nearby. We ended up spending one night the first time but enjoyed it so much we returned for two more nights near the tail-end of our trip.Since Nerja was the only place during our entire 3-week trip in Spain that we actually stayed on the waterfront, we took some time out to simply relax on our balcony and enjoy the various activities taking place along the Mediterranean coast. When we first arrived in town we made the very short walk from Hostal Marazul to a nicely landscaped and tiled promenade down by the beach, Plaza Fabrica de los Congrejos (Plaza of the Crabs). It is actually named after an old crab factory that used to be located in this part of Nerja. We experienced the first wet and windy weather of our trip on arrival in Nerja...

Ronda's "New" Bridge

by Bwana_Brown

As far as man-made attractions go in Ronda, Puente Nuevo wins hands-down! You probably need a full day to properly explore this amazing structure from above, inside and below - as well as from various distant viewpoints. As Ronda grew, in 1751 plans were made to bridge the 68-m wide and 120-m deep gorge at this location. Using a system of pulleys, large quarried stones from the bottom of the gorge were hoisted up one by one to begin the first stage of the project - building the foundation and the first smaller arch over the river and, on top of that, the huge second arch that brought the bridge height to 90 m. This was no quick project, with the original architect no longer involved by 1778 and the project coming to a stop for a short period. However, work finally resumed on the final stage of building the two upper arches as well as a room just under the roadway (presently a museum with...

Parador Hotel - what a setting!

by Bwana_Brown

While staying in Estepona, we simply had to make the short day-trip drive up into the coastal mountain range to visit one of Spain's most popular tourist spots - the beautiful little town of Ronda.Ronda owes its majestic setting to the effects of two rivers - the first being the Rio Guadiaro which has created a deep and broad valley in front of the city. At only 183 km (114 miles) in length, the Guadiaro is a relatively short river that rises near Ronda and then winds its way down through the mountains to discharge into the Mediterranean Sea near Sotogrande (not far from Gibraltar). These photos show some of the magnificent views that are available on a sunny day as we first took in the views from beside the expensive Parador Hotel and the New Bridge. Later, after crossing the bridge, we walked along the top of the valley escarpment to a nice little plaza located on the lip of the cliff,...

This B&B should be a 'tourist attraction'!

by Bwana_Brown

After our brief exploration of Cadiz, we took the inland route over the mountains to reach the Mediterranean coast near Gibraltar, but continued eastward to our next accommodations (a B&B called Casa Sol y Luna), where we had booked three nights - including Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. It was on Boxing Day that we finally decided to just sit tight for once and enjoy where we were on such a beautiful day amidst great surroundings! Because the sun was shining, after returning from our morning beach excursion in Estepona, we decided to simply sit back and enjoy the amazing ambiance of our B&B. It was great to take a day off from driving to enjoy a beer or two in the sunshine while enjoying the visual pleasure of this swimming pool area, while reading a book! The owners kept a supply of cold San Miguel beers in our breakfast refrigerator so I helped myself to a few (he said they were free...

If you happen to be in Spain at Christmas

by Bwana_Brown

A half-hour ferry ride later and we were wandering around in old downtown Cadiz by about 11:30 AM on a Wednesday with Christmas Eve in the offing. The streets of the city were well decked out with garlands of various types as the locals joined us to take in these scenes of Cadiz. It was not long before we stumbled upon one of the city's most popular spots - the palm tree-lined San Juan de Dios Square with its many small shops and cafes. Located close by is the well-decorated private mansion of the Miranda family (2nd photo), known as their 'country house', and built in the Neo-Classical architectural style in 1795.Sue really enjoyed seeing live Poinsettia trees growing in the downtown area (3rd photo) and our unplanned walking tour was great fun as we went through various ancient gates into narrow alleys that led who knew where. One thing about a city built on a spit of land is that it...
