Antequera - pearl in the crown of Andalusia

by pikuu

This is pearl of Andalusia! Not flooded by the crowds of souvenirs' searchers (like Ronda) Antequera offers many attractions. You will find here many impressive churches (my guidebook tells that this town looks like place where every Christian order had to establish their monastery). See monumental Colegiata de Santa Maria la Mayor and Iglesia del Carmen, look at Arabic Alcazaba (arab. fortress, castle), Arco de Los Gigantes or ancient excavations, wander along the picturesque, narrow streets and take a seat in some nice restaurant. Great time! You should choose the route around the old town located on the hill (map and folders you can get in tourist info point on Plaza San Sebastian). There is a very panoramic view of the whitewashed houses situated below. But also it is amazing view of surrounding mountains, especially of the very strange summit which I named "Sleeping Indian Chief...

Las Alpujarras in the highest

by pikuu

Only 30 km from tropical coast one can find completely different sceneries. Las Alpujarras is the mountainous region situated 2000 metres above sea level. It is well known from the stormy history of wars between Christians and Moors - famous legend of Almanzor defence took its place just in this area. Looking at the steep slopes, rocks, precipices you can easily imagine why this land was the last fortress for the Arabian warriors sieged by ruthless Spanish knights. The front of Alpujarras are the towns of Lanjaron and Orgiva. But don't stop there - take the meandering road leading uphill and uphill to the settlements of Bubion, Pampaneira or Soportujar (nice names, aren't they?)Here, comparing to the hot coastal atmosphere the temperature is much lower (5 or even 10 grades less), the mountains are covered by dense fog and fresh breeze is still cooling your face (something warmer than...

Arabic Andalusia

by pikuu

Looking for Arabic traces in Andalusia seems to be good idea for the trips around this land. Almost in every town - small, bigger, and big - you can find gates, fountains, streets, houses, fortresses, walls, portals, arches, sculptures, decorative tiles and reliefs and many other details - remains of the Islamic invasion which was ended over 500 years ago. And these ornaments, tangle of lines, patterns, flower motives and inscriptions are beautiful evidences of the past art but also creative inspirations for your design ideas.

Secret word - Muqarnas

by pikuu

Visiting Arabic monuments in Andalusia pay your attention to the wonderful details of the islamic decorative art. In many places (especially in Alhambra palaces) looking at the ceilings and arches you can find very unusual and beautiful elements. They look like strange stalactites or modified honeycombs. Look at the colors (mix of white, beige and turquoise), tangle of contrasting shapes, composition. You've just discovered MUQARNAS - original invention of and Arabic artmasters. I'm still enchanted by them!More about MuqarnasMore about Muqarnas - next page

The niceland of Axarquia

by pikuu

East of Malaga is located the region called Axarquia. This is the land of the modern coastal resorts like Torre del Mar, Torrox or Nerja but above all this is unspoilt area where you can feel the spirit of traditional Andalusia.Axarquia is the mountainous territory with the serpentines of roads, dried steep slopes, almonds' plantations, olive groves and charming small white towns. My trip through Axarquia started from Cómpeta (8 km north of Torrox Costa). First stop - coffee on the main square. Morning time, local delivery trucks are just unloaded, people are chatting on the street and they slowly beginning next day. The group of locals are discussing the preparations to local wine fiesta. You have to know that Cómpeta boasts its wonderful strong wine brand produced with the use of raisins. Delicious!Next places - Arenas and Vinuela. Afterwards a bit longer route to the town of Colmenar....

Axarquia episode II

by pikuu

Short appendix to the tip about region of Axarquia. One of the more pleasant towns here is Sayalonga placed 15 km north of Costa del Sol resort Torre del Mar (choose the exit from A7 highway towards Algarrobo). Some historians find the roots of the name Sayalonga in Roman words mean "Long dress". Interesting. But not the name is the most charming attraction of Sayalonga. It's worth to have a walk by the narrow and tidy streets (signposted by the pictures made from tiles illustrating town history).Perhaps it will be a bit bizarre but one of the most pretty places here is the town cemetery. Located about 10 minutes from the centre is untypical because the graves create circle. The oldest graves are situated one on the other and they look like tubes or perhaps small tents. This cemetery is located in the beautiful mountainous scenery and this charm is underlined by palms quietly move during...

Torrox Costa: sea and poor excavations

by pikuu

This small resort located between Nerja and Torre del Mar has very long and clean beach. On the beach, along the pretty nice promenade you can find several beach bars (Spanish: chirinquitos) offered good choice of grilled (usually) dishes. Try the fresh grilled sardines. The biggest trap in Torrox Costa are strongly recommended by tourist folders ancient excavations placed near lighthouse (eastern part of the town). But in real archaeological excavations are fenced dirty sand with chaos of stones and all types of rubbish: plastic bottles, papers, cigarette butts, bags, cans etc. This is rather great place for the "archaeologists of the contemporary mass culture" than for the lovers of prehistory.

Waters of Gudalfeo

by pikuu

Stop in the wilderness of the mountains, somewhere halfway between the coast and Granada city (road A44) where you can admire the colossal big dam construction. This engineering master-work stopped the waters of Gudalfeo river and created giant reservoir. This is the placer where you can really appreciate the power of human mind. I'm not rating this is good or bad - to built such a technological monument in the natural landscape. I'm not an expert. I just see the crystal, greenish water, big construction ended with waterfall, modern highway built on the long overpass. And It's amazing - Yes, technical power is also worth of respect (pyramids, ancient aqueducts or amphitheatres, modern sky-towers, airports, oil rigs or bridges). Near the dam usually stops the van from where one can buy local fruits - fresh melons, juicy mangos and oranges.

Salobrena - fortress with the sea view

by pikuu

This is a bit bigger town than other visited by me places (like Sayalonga, Competa, Frigiliana). It is located on the Mediterranean coast near crossroads of the highways Malaga - Granada - Almeria.Salobrena can be a nice stop during the trip to/from more known places. Especially local Alcazaba - big Arabic castle on the hill top - is worth of an hour. Walls and towers on the edge of big rock, far above of your head really look impressive! How it looked during the Arabic invasion? How powerful was the Muslim kingdom?

From Nerja to Frigiliana and back

by pikuu

Nerja is the easternmost resort of Costa del Sol. You can swim here on its nice beaches, drink coffee on the small oldtown. it can be also useful base for visiting Andalusian interior. First point of these trips could be Frigiliana - 5 km north of Nerja. Go there in the morning. I don't suggest that it should be just after sunrise (but if you are photographing it can be the best hour - light this time is very soft). Take the bus about 8-9 pm before the tourist crowds finish their breakfasts, get into the hotel buses and change the tranquil atmosphere of this small town.Simply this is pleasant town with tidy streets full of flowers. Sit in the coffee garden, ask for something to drink and feel that time doesn't exist. Very delightful feeling!
