    Beaches around

by SirRichard Updated Apr 4, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Vejer is not located right on the coast, but very near. There are many nice beaches around. The closest (14 kms) is Caños de Meca and going south you will find another great beach: Barbate and Zahara.

There are public buses for both, with Comes bus company.

Equipment: Another good beach northwards is El Palmar. You can find some info about it in the link below:

    Spain's surfing paradise

    by Bwana_Brown Updated Sep 13, 2009

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

While we were sitting in our car along the Atlantic coast just northwest of Zahara de los Atunes, one of the local surfers turned up in his well-equipped van. He also had a German Shepherd dog with him who he briefly let out to wander around while he began to unload his surfing gear. The trouble was, the dog did not seem to have any traffic sense and stood on the highway bringing traffic to a halt until his owner retrieved him and confined him to the van from that point on. Eventually, the lone surfer on this beach made his way down to the where the action was and made several short runs on the waves, but nothing that was too spectacular. This part of Spain is noted for its various surfing activities because of the way the winds are shaped by geology. The high pressure systems over the Mediterranean Sea tend to blow outward into the lower pressure zones over the Atlantic Ocean and, as they funnel through the narrow Strait of Gibraltar, the compressed winds really pick up some speed.

Equipment: Only about 2 hours later, we found ourselves further up the coast at Cabo de Trafalgar where there was a lot more activity (3rd photo). This time, it was by several wind surfers taking advantage of the swirling winds near this famous cape where the decisive naval battle between British and French/Spanish fleets took place in 1805. The windsurfing looked like a lot of fun!

  • Las Via Verdes

by blint Written Feb 23, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Las Vias Verdes means something like the Green Tracks; they get their name from the fact that they were once railway tracks, or they were built to be railway tracks. Nowadays they are paths or trails you can cycle along. They can be found all over Andalucia, but here in Vejer too.

So if you like cycling don't miss out on this great opportunity to see some of the most beautiful countryside in Andalucia, and get on your bike!

You can go between Vejer and Barbate which is about 35km but there are some steep slopes so be prepared. Barbate is on the coast.

You can also go to other beautiful mountain towns such as Olvera de la Frontera or Arcos de la Frontera.

Equipment: Take into account that if you are thinking of doing this in summer it gets VERY hot. Up to 40 degrees. It is likely to be very sunny at other times of the year too so wear a helmet not only for safety but also to protect you from the sun. Another good idea is to take plenty of water with you, more than you think you'll need as there will not be many places to buy it along the way. In fact the Vias are closed in August due to the extreme heat conditions.

You can hire a bile for around 12 euros a day if you don't or can't bring your own.
