Belchite Things to Do

  • by RussellHadd Written Oct 16, 2005

Belchite is two towns in one. Forget the new town unless it's fiesta time. Head for the old town; a ruin and a national monument. During the Civil War Belchite was on the frontline and was damaged severley. The townsfolk were given a choice between an irrigation system for the surrounding farmland or a new town - there was divided opinion but the new town won. As a result we have been left with an incredible monument containing derelict houses and ruined churches, one of which has a shell lodged in the tower. It's also the set for Terry Gillian's Adventures of Barron Munchhausen. Despite it's apparent dereliction it is home to some peñas which have underground meeting rooms and bars. I was lucky enough to be in Belchite during the fiestas when I tagged on to a couple of peñas and ventured into the old town by candle light.
