In 2001 Aragon's Mudejar architecture was awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO, in recognition if its outstandingly unique artistic value.
Mudejar is the name given to the Muslims who stayed on in Spain after their homeland had been conquered during the Christian Reconquest, but who were allowed to retain their laws, religion and customs.
These superb craftsmen and builders constructed and decorated new Christian buildings, fusing together , in the process, European Christian styles with Islamic traditions, creating original architecture with universal value.Related to:
