Favorite thing: This richly decorated chapel ceiling is what the Teruel "lovers" will have to see for the eternity.

Fondest memory: The lovers of Teruel lived in the XIII century. They were Juan de Marcilla and Isabel de Segura, members of two of the most prominent families in Medieval Teruel.

When Juan asked Isabel's hand in marriage, Mr Segura refused; because Juan being the second son in the family, he would not inherit as many properties as his daughter deserved. Desperate, Juan asked Isabel to wait for him for five years. Within that periode of time he should gather enough wealth to make her father happy.

The deadline expired though, and Juan did not return. Isabel's father urged her to marry a powerful town lord. Thinking that Juan would never come back, she finally accepted.

On the very day of the wedding Juan appeared loaded with as many treasures as never had been seen in Teruel. When he saw Isabel in front of the altar, he fell upon her feet and died, so much pain there was in his heart. The following day, during the funerals, Isabel asked to see his beloved Juan for the last time. When she approached her lips to his dead face, she also died of love.

Is that a legend or reality? Nobody knows. But, certainly there are bones inside the mausoleum.

Mudjar towers make up the skyline of Teruel

Favorite thing: Teruel is a very provincial city. It is actually it is the smallest of all the province capital cities in Spain and also the most remote one.

Secluded in a rough environment of arid plains and wild mountains, the weather is unclement and living conditions have always been hard. This has led to a constant lost of population during the last decades.

However, Teruel is a nowadays a prosperous city whose inhabitants are devoted to ensure a brighter future for the next generations, so that they will not have to leave the city in order to find opportunities in life.

Look! the bones are there!

Favorite thing: Teruel has its own version of the "Romeo and Juliet" drama.

The famous lovers of Teruel are buried in this small mausoleum built in the XIX century by Juan de Ávalos inside the Mudejar church of Saint Peter.

At least they rest hand in hand forever.

Fondest memory: For the not so romantics, you may be interested to see their mummies below the tombs.
