The best day to visit Mieres is on market day (I can't recall the day.) One day a week, the market is full of people selling everything from handmade table cloths, to jewlery, handbags, bootlegged music, and of course, fresh produces and groceries. The market is fantastic! Depending on the weather, many stalls are located outside the market proper.

Most of the shopping in Mieres is on avenida Manuel Llaneza or the street that runs parallel calle Leopoldo Alas Clarin, or the pedestrian mall (which runs perpedicular to them both- see map on main page) on calle la Vega. Mieres has many nice boutiques.
What to buy: Clothing, shoes, lace, artisnal goods, artisnal cured meats & cheeses, local handicraft, etc.
What to pay: In general, prices in Spain are higher for durable goods (not food) than the US, but the quality is gereraly superior.

calle Manuel Llaneza, a main thoroughfare and shopping district. Also the location of my friend's bookstore "Libreria Cultura".
