Sports Events in Asturias

Stevie was able to once more join us in Lugo, his blisters had healed sufficiently to allow him to continue walking, so the 3 of us left Lugo in the mist on the short days walk to San Roman de Retorta. The “Way” was mainly on minor roads passing quickly out of Lugo and through many small villages en-route with opportunities for coffee and lunch in friendly bars

Nice day through some rugged countryside, the route starts off on a minor road, then onto paths crossing a ridge before plunging into a deep valley with a reservoir, crossing the dam and a short road section before picking up an ancient “Way” up and into Grandas de Salime, a small town, then more minor roads and good paths to the hamlet of Castro.

Another reasonably short day, the route follows the valley up from Castro before crossing The Alto de Acebo (1030m) and then soon leaves Asturias and crosses into Galicia.
The “Way” then undulates through pleasant countryside with small villages and the town of Fonsagrada (All facilities) before dropping into Padron on a mixture of good paths and minor roads
Plenty of friendly bars and shops to keep you well supplied with coffee/ lunch and a Pleasant days walking

As I had done the extra kilometres the day before this turned out to be a shorter day than originally planned and this really turned out for the best !!
The first reason was that this was the day the the Camino Primitivo went over the highest “Alto” of the entire route, “Peurto del Palo” at 1140m, a long and tiring accent not made any easier because the weather had again turned !! Horizontal driving rain on the summit making it all but impossible to stand up, let alone see which way the route went. Never-the-less I was able to follow the route off the summit and make my way to Berducedo where another walking companion was joining me, Birgit from Berlin (VT Member bijo69). The weather was much improved by the time she arrived on the Alsa bus from Oviedo and we walked the remaining 4.5k to La Messa.

Day 5 dawned badly with my walking companion, Stevie being unable to continue, His feet were badly blistered, a combination of the extra miles and he wet weather. So he decided to take a few days of top see whether they would recover sufficiently for him to be able to re-join me alter on in the walk.
My original plan was to walk around 20k to Borres, but I felt good, the weather had improved so I decided to keep going all the way to Pola de Allende which turned out to be a good decision !!
The route was ever more becoming more mountainous with higher “Alto’s” to cross and deeper valleys to plunge into, but the paths were good and there were sufficient villages with small bars / shops to be able to find lunch and coffee stops.

Our first full days walking less than 30k, unfortunately the weather turned wet but we still had a good days walking, a mixture of ancient ways and minor roads through rolling / hilly countryside, unfortunately the ancient ways had turned to mud, especially on the route approaching Tineo (Best to avoid these tracks and stick to the road if you also happen to be walking in wet conditions) Again, enough choices of halts for coffee and lunch at small villages and towns en-route.
