Isla de Formentor Things to Do
Mirador d’es Colomer is the most popular view point along Formentor peninsula. It is also known as mirador del Mal Pas.
Most buses stop at the view point which is the first and the biggest one with plenty of parking places.
People park and then walk up to the terrace, there’s a small monument (pic 2) from where you have some view of the plain rocks deep into the sea (pic 3).
You have to climb up the steps and reach the terrace with the great view (pic 1), this is the time for you for some great pictures, it gets a bit crowded so can be hard to have a picture of you without anyone else in the frame :)
If you are in good fit you can also walk up the opposite hill where there is Taliaia d’Albgercuix, it’s an old watchtower (for spying the pirates) located at 380m above sea level and have some great panoramic views from up there. You can see the tower on the upper right corner of picture 4.
Formentor peninsula is a great place to visit anyway and you may stop way before its far end and still feel satisfy because of the view. But since we decided to drive there there was no doubt that we would go to the end and check from close distance the famous lighthouse.
Cap de Formentor is the northest spot of Mallorca island and obviously the best thing you can do here is just relax and admire the never ending sea or just watch Menorca island on the other side. The lighthouse stands on a cliff 260 above the sea level.
We walked a bit around taking pictures, there’s also a café there where you can have some refreshments in much lower prices than if you do it at Formentor hotel of course :) Lot of traffic at the free public toilets too :)
Aftet mirador d’es Colomer we continued driving along Carrer del Formentor, we passed Cases Velles (lots of pine trees around) and then we noticed some small parking spaces on the left side of the road.
We stopped in some of them for some extra pictures and didn’t regret it because we had the chance to see the famous lighthouse on the distance as it stands proudly at the end of Formentor peninsula.
The vertical rocky walls that rise above the sea is a great thing to remember from our trip in Mallorca
The parking space is limited but we were lucky enough to see a car leaving upon our arrival every time we noticed a view point (usually there’s a sign but I cant recall if we saw a sign first or just other cars).
Isla de Formentor Transportation
Formentor peninsula is at the north part of Mallorca, about 80km away from Palma if you want to reach the far end of the peninsula where the lighthouse is. From Puerto Pollensa the first view point is about 6km away and the lighthouse 14km away.
Many people use an organized tour with a bus that takes you until the first view point which is Mirador d’es Colomer.
Using a local bus must be hard, bus #353 from Alcudia or Port Pollensa will take you up to Formentor but I cant confirm where exactly it stops because if it doesnt go/stop at the view points is useless.
Of course if you have a car you can go much further than the first view point. Have in mind that the twisting long road is narrow at some points so take extra care especially for cars coming the other way. Most part is great and scenic, we loved it.
Another problem is to find a free space for parking, Mirador d’es Colomer has a big one but I guess if you dont go early it’s gonna be full too.
Some other view points have only space for 7-8 cars so it was hard for us even in late may (pic 2).
At Cap de Formentor most of the cars started to park along the road (pic 3), I cant imagine how far this could go in high season.
We noticed 2 brave people with bicycles, I guess you can also hike along the way, it seemed hard for us but I guess it must one of the best places to hike in Mallorca (although Tramontana range on the west coast have the best paths)
