I strongly recommend a trip to Valldemossa.

This village is situated at 436 meters above sea level. It is known because Federic Chopin and his lover George Sand lived there from december 1838 to february 1839. They let some rooms at the Cartuja ( a Carthusian monastery). This is the main sight of Valldemossa.

The Charterhouse complex is made up of a large church, begun in 1751 and consecrated in 1812. A small pharmacy founded at the beginning of the XVII century and used up to 1896. A library. The Prior cell a suite with a chapel, visitors room, the bed room and a dining room). The cells n. 2 and 4; where Chopin and Sand lived. These houses lots of writings, paintings amb various memoriabilia of the couple. The Cartuja has some nice small gardens just outside some cells. I've read these were orchards for the use of the friars. This building includes also a couple of museums I didn't visit. Joined to the Charterhouse there is the Palacio del Rey Sancho. This was a royal palace and the first house of the monks. Practically it was the first monastery.

Valldemossa was also the birthplace of Saint Catalina Thomàs. Most of the houses in this town have a plaque with words such as "Beata ruega por nosaltres" (Santa pray for us). A small chapel was built on the site of her birthplace.

Once you explored the village and took lots of pics you can't miss to taste the local speciality; the cocas the Valldemossa. These are very soft sweet buns. I had one at Ca'n Molinas. It is a small bakery quite near the chapel of Saint Catalina Thomàs.

Valldemossa is located 15 km [ 10 miles] from Palma in the Tramuntana mountains. A bus leaves Palma at regular intervals.Frederic Chopin and his mistress stayed in the old monastery in 1838-39, the Monastery is open to the public, and you can see the "cell" they stayed in, also Chopin"s piano is on show. Nearly every house in the village has a painted tile of St. Catalina Thomas near the front door, he was born in Valldemossa. Modern day celebrities live in the village.Michael Douglas sponsored a culture centre in Valldemossa. There are plenty of bars, cafes, and resturants to refresh you.5 pictures of Valldemossa

VALLDEMOSSA

Valldemossa is situated about 17km north of Palma and is a very beautiful little town that sits atop a hillside. It is a bit touristy but it is well worth a visit. There are several restaurants where you can sit and watch the day go by after visiting the Carthusian Monestary , the old royal residence of King Sancho and the museum. You may wish to shop in some of the interesting boutiques too!

And did you know? This is where Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have a place!

Valldemossa monastery

The Valldemossa monastery has attracted throughout its history illustrious people from all over the world –amongst these excel Chopin and his companion, George Sand (who was a woman!)– and is one of the principal attractions of the municipality and one of the preferred visits by tourists who come to the island. The origin of the buildings dates from the times of King James II of Mallorca, who chose this exceptional place in the Tramuntana mountain range, situated over 400 metres high, to build a palace for his son Sanç, known as the Palau del rei Sanç. In 1399 King Martín el Humano ceded all the royal possessions in Valldemossa to the Carthusian monks. These founded the monastery and lived there until 1835, when it passed into private hands, divided between nine owners, except the church. You need time to visit the whole place, but it' worth to spend this time!

Beckham sold a million jerseys already

Well, I did. Ok, I had the advantage that I was there on a hot summers day and he was there in winter, he was sick and his piano wasn´t there.
The famous composer lived here with George Sand for one winter in the charterhouse of Valldemossa. Many visitors are coming to Valldemossa to see how they lived in the cloister. I found 7,50€ too expensive and instead of following the masses I strolled around some small streets of this picturesque town....
I only met Beckham there (see pic)

Valldemossa is famous for its historical and cultural background. It is also this town where the composer Frédéric Chopin and the French writer George Sand spent their now-famous winter in 1838 and 1839.

This is where the touristic boom of Majorca started. This lovely little town is actually not on the coast, but Frédéric Chopin and George Sand spent a winter here many years ago, and romantics still follow their steps in our days.
