It's the hell of a job driving downwards the coast to Calobra. And shall we say that the sights, upon arrival compensate the effort?

Well... If you admire dramatic landscapes, yes. If you wanted just to see something different in the island... Yes. If you were expecting a very spectacular site... No.

But, may I ask, spectacular, is not the way down and up?

La Granja is a beautiful historical mansion (X to XX century) with a garden, woods, and lots of domestic and wild animals.

Here you can see some handicraft shows from 3.30 p. m. You can taste various Majorcan specialities such as jams, sweets (taste the pan de higo) and wines.

At La Granja there is a restaurant, a bar and a souvenir shop.

A beautiful beach in Castilla, (once a small fishing village) which started adapting the increase of the tourist boom dates back only in the early 1960's. It is 15-20 mins away from the airport, about 7 kilometers from the capital city. The beach sits at the western end of Playa de Palma joined by a wide promenade to Arenal in the east.

We joined a guided group tour way down to the west coast. The first stop is in a leather factory in Inca. Then we headed to Lluc and visited the monastery, then drove through a winding road towards Calobra west. From there we took the boat to Soller and from Soller with the train to Palma. We were very much delighted of many beautiful views and sights during our journey. Every hotel organize such trips thus the prices varies from one to the other. Worth doing!

If you are in form, join a group of bikers organized from many travel agents or from your hotel. I'm sure you'll enjoy your tour through the serpentine roads leading you until the bay of Sa Calobra. We took the convenient way :-)

There is another stop on the scenic route from Valldemossa to Port d´Antratx. It is some kind of adventure to climb up inside the old watchtower. There is only a small ladder going up to and you need both hands. Not easy with a camera (and I had two: a photo camera and a film camera)! From top of the tower you have wonderful view over the coastline in all directions. But be careful. Going down the ladder is more difficult….

The beautiful west side of the island has some great scenery. North and west coastlines are wild and rugged, dominated by the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range which runs the length of the coast. Most of the road is perched along the cliff edge and shaded by pine trees. You can stop at the Mirador Ricardo Roca for a panoramic view of a series of coves. These coves can be reached only from the sea (you can make boat cruises to see them).Another good stop and view you have at the Mirador de Ses Animes, a belvedere constructed in the 17th century.

The mountainous area around on the western side of the island presented some of the most stunning scenery you are likely to find anywhere.

We found the road up from Palma to Soller (ignoring the tunnel of course) then along to Deya (or Deia) and Valldermossa a delight to travel.

We didnt get up to Sa Calobra, but I believe that is also quite impressive as well.

Not far away from Deià there is another great viewing point........with the unique rock Sa Foradada. It´s so unique because of the big hole in it.....

You can hike down there which lasts about 2 hours for both ways...We didn´t do it, cause it was too hot. Should be worth the effort in spring or so.....

Anyway, the view from above is nice too......
There is little shop selling postcards and what´s even more important ice cold drinks which are really welcome on a hot summers day.

A restaurant with this lovely view offers more for the hungry traveller.

My best experience in Deiá was the lovely lunch we had on a terrace overlooking the picturesque artists village.... My friend and I we both had Fried Gambas in garlic oil (our favourite!) and with this view it even tasted better as it did anyway....
