Talaiots and Taules
1 more image

Towards 1400 B.C., the native civilization of the island produced various large stone constructions known as talaiots. This word gives the name of this prehistoric period of the island: the Talaiotic period.

Some settlements from this time are Trepucó, Talatí de Dalt, Torre d'en Galmés or Son Catlar. Each one has a monument of worship called a taula and artificial caves. You can see as well a few necropolis, such as Calascovas o Cala Morell.

The pics were taket at the settlement of Talatí de Dalt, situated 4 kilometres from the city of Maó.

Naveta de Tudons (exterior view)

Human presence in Minorca is confirmed from the beginning of the Bronze Age (2000 B.C.). This is known as the pre-Talaiotic period and it left important burial monuments such as the collective tombs known as navetas. The best known of these is the Naveta de Tudons. From this period there are also some small settlements made up of apse rooms.

You can enter the Naveta, it has 2 levels and more than 50 corpses were buried here. It’s one of the most ancient buildings in the world (still preserving it’s roof!)

Es Castell - Military Museum

In the square of Es Castell you'll find a splendid military museum which used to be a military barracks. …you’ll spot it because it has large guns outside!

The Englishman who gave us our ticket was very helpful and gave us a map of historical sites, and information about La Mola and Malborough. Very helpful

Inside it traces the history of Menorca from it's many prehistoric sites (which are scattered all over the island), to when then British owned it, fought France over it then swapped it for Trinidad! Take your time to wander round in the morning.

Entrance fee 3 Euros
Two floors, short introductory video.
Closes approximately 12pm

Es Castell - Town

Es Castell

The most easterly town in Spain and the first to get the sun.
It is a town steeped in history and military connections, evidence of which can still be seen today. Originally named Georgetown by the English who built it according to military plans, it was later renamed Real Villa de San Carlos (Villa Carlos) when the island reverted to Spanish rule. It is now known, as it always has been by the Menorquíns, as Es Castell - The Castle, because of its proximity to the previously demolished Fort of San Felip
The town’s history is strongly reflected in its layout and architecture. The most obvious is the central square, previously the parade ground for the English, which is dominated by the elegant façades of the clock tower of the XVIII century town hall and military barracks.

Twice weekly there are markets in the square however like most of the markets I visited they are strongly touristy.

Take your time to wander down to the harbour, dine at one of the many dock side restaurants, admire the view, you can see Fort Malborough.

Rock Climbing, just going around on your feet climbing the clifs, some have paths allready made from other walkers. Great way to see the island

I advise everybody that want to go to Menorca to rent a car because its a small island (43Km since Mahon to Ciutadella) and 19Km North-South .
With this car you can accede to small beaches hidd inside the forest.

All beaches located at North of the island, for example Cala MORELL, BINIMEL.LA, cala MICA
