The history of Palma's courtyards dates back to the thirteenth century, with the advent of the Gothic period, and culminated between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. The city's most prominent houses were rebuilt during this time and, in some cases, reformed according to Renaissance and Baroque tastes.
Nowadays, these palatial homes have been turned into headquarters for institutions and museums and, in many cases, are still private homes.
If you walk in Palma keep your eyes open for little suprise views like this... I've learned in Mallorca to look at every open door, half open gate and waht else that allows me to take a peak at a possible treasure. A thing i still do today..
