Bilbao has a brand new airport designed by the spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.
There are mainly 2 ways to get to the centre from the airport:
1.- Airport - Plaza : there are buses from 6:30 to 22:30 each 30 minutes to the centre of Bilbao (25 minutes, 1 euro). You have to get off at PLAZA MOYUA.
2.- Airport - Termibus (bus station): From Plaza Moyua you have to take the metro towards PLENTZIA and get off in the 1st stop (SAN MAMES, the soccer stadium, 5 minutes, 1 euro). As you go off, look for signs of TERMIBUS, the main bus station in Bilbao.
3.- If you prefer a taxi, it would be 18-20 euros airport-Termibus (or to the centre). Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

To get to Bilbao from my home in the north of England, it was cheaper and more convenient for me to fly to Madrid from Liverpool, then from Madrid to Santander then get the bus to Bilbao! (A direct flight would have meant a long and expensive train to London then Stanstead)
My flight from Madrid cost 6 Euros! (inc taxes etc - Ryanair, hand luggage only and online check in)
The flight was less than an hour.
I picked up a map of Bilbao at the small tourist Info Office. I understood that there was a direct bus from Santander airport to Bilbao, but was told that I'd have to get a bus from the airport to Santander bus station in the city centre. (One was due in 5 minutes, and you purchased your ticket from the driver)
A bus pulled up, and a group queued to board, but the driver said you needed a ticket. One of the group was saying that the ticket office was closed, but the driver shut the doors and drove off. I wasn't sure if he just didn't like the look of this group.
I hung around for a bit longer, but then decided to get a taxi. I was quite shocked to find that the fare for the short journey was 18 Euros!!! I questioned this, but the taxi driver kept pointing to his meter 12 euro fare + 6 euros supplement (airport pick up and luggage (for my small case)
I later found out that the service bus from the airport was a couple of Euros-and the stop was a short walk from the arrivals area. The bus that had pulled up was from the ALSA company - you can pre book online, or purchase tickets when the desk is open)
(Yes, I should have done my homework!!)
I purchased a ticket for the journey to Bilbao, which cost 6.71 Euros for the 90 minute journey.

I flew from Bilbao to Seville by Vuelling. I'd booked my flight online prior to departing the UK.
A bus to the airport leaves regularly from San Mames Bus station (every 20 minutes). Service 3247. Purchase your ticket from the ticket office. The journey takes less than 20 minutes.
I was looking forward to seeing the airport terminus that had been designed by Santiago Calatrava.

Bilbao greets its visitors with signature architecture, as Bilbao's airport, located in Loiu, is also an attraction in itself for its stunning design by Santiago Calatrava. The passenger terminal is reminiscent of a flying dove, while the control tower seems to be inspired by a hawk. As it happens with many of the works of that architect, the airport is also rather controversial, as many functional aspects have been sacrificed for the sake of aesthetics (for instance, people in the arrival area have to wait outdoors in a rainy city as Bilbao is), although some of these problems are already being solved.
The airport has connections with the major Western European cities. This airport makes of Bilbao the major hub in Northwest Spain.
The accessibility to the airport, however, leaves a lot to be desired. The only means to reach it without private vehicle are taxis and a Bizkaibus line. A project for a railway line to the centre is still under consideration. When completed, it would allow to reach the airport from the Old Town in less than ten minutes. There are good comunications with the city, by bus every 30 minutes during the week and every 1 hour at weekends. 2€.
There are also taxis but those are more expensive, 25€.

Flying to Bilbao is not as cheap as other destinations in Europe can be. Low cost airlines serving Bilbao (BIO) are Volareweb (from Rome Ciampino and Milan Malpensa in Italy) and Easyjet (from London STN), Hapag LLoyd Express (from Hannover, Koln/Bonn and Stuttgart).

Bilbao airport looks great, but unfortunately this cannot hide some flaws. Some flights go before the first bus service to the airport, the shopping is poor, and there is a lack of space airside. The coffee bars open at 6.15am for you early travellers. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane
