Iruña Cafe
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Opened in 1903, this cafe is a classical when in Bilbao. I use to go there for a coffee, and enjoy watching the decorated walls (arabesque style, with views of the Alhambra and Andalucia) and the classy atmosphere.

Is a nice place to meet at night and start the night here...

They have a wide variety of "pintxos" (basque country tapas) for the vefore lunch "aperitivos" or you can have a proper meal "a la carte".

Cum Laude Café Bilbao: Good Things Comes In Small Packages
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Cum Laude Café Bilbao is a neighbourhood bar/café/restaurant that you will definitely miss if you blink while passing by it. There is nothing about the exterior that attracts attention from anyone except the most loyal regulars. With only three small plates of pintxos on the counter, it looks more like a café than a bar, however, a very pleasant surprise can be found beyond that humble appearance.

The restaurant is tiny. Although we count seven small tables, we have a feeling that if there are more than 18 people coming for dinner at the same time, everyone would have to be on a very friendly basis because there will be very little space between diners. The walls are painted in soft green and yellow colours, and with simple white wood tables and rattan chairs, the projected image is upbeat with a touch of classiness.

The menu of the day offers guests a primero, a segundo, a dessert, bread, water, and a full bottle of red wine for a mere €9, IVA included. There are between three and five dishes to choose from in each category. For our two menus of the day, we had potato salad, mixed salad (in Basque, a mixed salad also has tuna, egg, and asparagus), filet of calf on top of french fries, bacon and eggs on top of french fries, flan, and a slice of San Marcos cake. Half of the food and half of the wine remained untouched, not because they were not good (on contrary, everything was delicious) but because the serving was simply too large.

We saw only two women in the front and a chef in the kitchen, and they ran the place effectively with their affability and helpfulness.

Victor Montez: Great Pintxos and decor
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Victor Montez, on Plaza Nueva in the Casco Viejo, does great pintxos (tapas) and has lovely ornate decor. While you are there, count all the whisky bottles!

    Tapelia: Excellent Mediterranean Flavour
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Tapelia knows how to bring creativity to the preparation of traditional Spanish and Basque dishes, and the line of customers waiting to be seated each night attests to its chef’s talent. The menu offers eight different selections of very good paella, half a dozen first-rate fish dishes, tender chicken, excellent cannelloni, well-turned crepes, and great choices of vegetables.

Service, although courteous, is very slow. We have never seen more than two persons in the wait staff; both often disappeared in the kitchen -- an increase of kitchen personnel would certainly help decrease the long wait in the dining room.

Varied Bars: Pintxo Route No.1 - Maestro Garcia
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Garcia Rivera has a collection of bars offering a range of pintxos. Running from Or Konpon on Poza itself, to Marakay, on Rodriguez Arias, are a fine selection of bars.

There is a mini-seafood market where on Sundays you can buy everthing from cooked lobster to Winkles, as well as a bar specialising in Basque cheese pintxos.

Txoco Ono: Great place for Lunch
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Looks like a conference room that is filled with round tables but the food is wonderful. They offer a three course menu and all meals are the same price. Its usually frequented by the workers of the technological park next door but dont let that deter you from trying it.

    Redbean soup.

Marinela: Marinella - Good fish and seafood
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This restaurant, located close to plaza indautxu, is comfortable and (for Bilbao) spacious. This is important when you have a young family!

The restaurant service is friendly and helpful, and has a range of set menus. E.g. A Saturday menu especial (3 courses with ine) at 18 Euros, a weekday menu at about 9 Euro.

The dining room (comedor) is located (like many in Bilbao) through the back of the bar area.

The fish is usually very good

Cafe in the Market: Anything actually in stock?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • It's probably as simple as you can get, the worker and shopper's cafe in the market. I ordered a cheese sandwich and the guy pops out for about a minute, chop chop, there's a filling sandwich with typically great local cheese. They probably don't even have a fridge, why would they? They're in a great big larder!

Boccata de Manchego (cheese sandwich to me).

Restaurante Urbieta: Learning How to Dine Like the Locals
  • Tip Rating:
  • Our friends showed us how to dine economically and yet still enjoy local cusine. Many restaurants offer a daily menu. You get 2 courses, a dessert, and a bottle of red wine. The whole meal was only 8 euros per person!
For the first course you chose from a collection of starters. The second course usually offered a few meat and a few fish meals. Dessert was from a choice of 3 or 4 selections.

the mushrooms in sauce for the starter
    the flán for dessert
(can't remember the main course i had!)
(must have been that red wine obscuring my memory)
