Various: Pintxo route No.2 - LePanto and Diputation

  • This route of pintxo bars is located in the centre of town around Gran Via (Metro: Moyua). As always in Spain, when you eat is very important: go too early or late and there will be little available. For pintxos, around 1.30pm and 7pm are often good time.

This route starts at Lepanto (Plaza Pedo Eguillor) at the bottom of General Concha. This large bar has in the past won the "best pintxo's in Bilbao" award. From there, head across into the pedestriansed c/Diputation that runs down the side of the town hall. Here there are La Olla (Diputation 12) and La Vina (no. 10). There are tables outside La Olla. If you sit at tables in La Vina there is waiter service and choice from a menu (depending on time of day), alternatively stand at the bar. The ham in here is excellent.

After La Vina, move on into El Globo which is on the corner (next to the chinese restaurant), with tables outside. Pintxos are good here, but this isa pickpocket haunt so watch your bags.

After El Gobo, cross Gran Via and you come to Lasa, who do a nice menu del dia (at workday lunchtimes) and a reasonable range of pintxos (at the bar). They also have tables outside. Just down street (about 10 metres) is Bar Leketio (named after the Basque fishing village and carrying images of the place, but not of the famous annual "pulling the head off the goose" event). Here, there are some nice raciones too, including antxoas (anchovies).

The total distance travelled is probably less than a hundred metres, and you will be enriched by the food and empoverished by the price. (The pintxos around here can be expensive as it is the city centre with many business customers).

Oh, and try the various wines on offer too!

A good pintxo jamon takes some beating.

    MANDANGA: Seafood in Santurce

Mandanga Restaurant, located in the port of Santurce, is probably one of the best places near Bilbao to eat fresh grilled fish. In this classic restaurant you can eat a delicious fish in a quite cheap price, between 12€ and 18€, unless you ask for besugo, one of the most preciated fishes in this area, it should cost around 50€.
But the best is that they grill the fish in the street where they have all the fish expossed, so you can watch the material directly and choose.
The cooks are in the tipical basque fisherman suit, blue 'maon' trausers and shirt.

To reach Mandanga take the Metro to Portugalete (las station in Line 2), go downhill to the Hangging Bridge and continue walking in the banks of the river in sea direction. In about 10-15 minutes you´ll arrive to the Port of Santurce. Just in the port is an old white building where you´ll read 'Hogar del Pescador'. That's it!! Mandanga is located in the Fishermen's Home in the port!!
And if you are not able to find it just ask for Mandanga´s once you are in Santurce, everybody know that!!
Most of the times it´s full so I recomend you to book a table. TLF: 94 461 02 11

A good dinner for two people could be:

    - Start with:
    Mussels in Green Sauce.
    Jabugo Jam.
    - Continue with any of this fishes combined with a simple salad dressed with salt, vinegar and olive oil:
    Txitxarro
    Sardinas: Sardines
    Dorada
    Rape
    Lubina
    Rodaballo: Turbot.
    Besugo: Sea-Bream.
    - And finish with:
    Sorbete de Limón
    Coffee
    Patxarán: Tipical basque liquor.

PRICE: Between 30 and 40 €uros per person.

For lunch or dinner go to 'ENEPERI' restaurant. They have cheap food to have lunch on a beautiful terrace looking at the sea. It's 2 km. away from Bakio, as you head to Bermeo, the next town

In the photo you can see 'San Juan', a little church that can be seen from the restaurant.

Morcilla, chistorra, grilled chicken, fried green peppers...

Traditional Basque cuisine. They have menus for 15 euros. Recomended in the Guides : Campsa & Michelin. Try the typical haddock (Bacalao al Pil Pil), and for dessert: rice with milk (arroz con leche)

    Mugarra: Pintxos, tortillas....

  • Restaurante Mugarra is a long time local favourite. It opens early in the morning for breakfast, and has "pintxos" and tortillas in abundance. It has been a prize winner in both these fields for a number of years, and lots of things disappear the moment they come out of the kitchen, so ask for them quickly! Coffee is good (always a good sign in Bilbao). They also have a restaurant area in the rear which does slightly more upmarket and expensive menus of the day at lunchtime, but the improvement in quality is worth it.
Efficient service. Chef: Luis Carlos Sanz.
Always take visitors to Bilbao there and have yet to be disappointed. Also a la carte.
Trivia: Mugarra is a mountain peak in the Durango range in Bizkaia.

Too many to describe...all tortillas are excellent, and love their early morning sausage and bacon roll! Pintxos with vegetables are excellent. Menu of the day is very good value.

The old town has many bars and cafes to choose from. We enjoyed an evening drrifting from one to another with a drink and a snack in each.
    A tapas crawl I uess.
Plaza Nueva particularly enjoyable and busy.

This restaurant was absolutely packed when we arrived for lunch. Packed full of locals coming in for lunch. We thought that it had to be a good spot. And it was. We waited some time before getting a table but it was worth the wait. We each ordered a lunch special which was about 12EUR and included soup or salad, entree, dessert, espresso and wine.

There was a language barrier as we didn't speak Spanish and they didn't speak English but they made the effort and we were able to communicate and get good food and good service.

Lunch Special.. all three of us had a good meal.

For me and my friends the best places to eat were in the old quarter (at the right of the bridge of the photo). Try the "tapas" in Plaza Nueva (New square) and in Las 7 calles (7 streets)

Classic place to have a cup of coffee and desert. It is an old traditional place where you can find good dessert.
